i know , i know, stupid thread! but i have used this word SOOO much growing up and even now that i didnt even realize how much i use it until a student said. of course, its a gentler word for the "F" word. since im canadian, i assume most canadians use it, ASSUME. but, is it commonly used in places like the U.S / NZ / UK / Aus. ??

thanks

I've heard Americans say things like, "No friggin' way"...but not where a student would be likely to hear it.

yeah, students don't hear and say it often, they just go all out and say the "F-word" these days!! actually, they heard it from me coz i was pi**ed off one time. i know, i know, im such a great teacher! anyway, i'd rather have them say "frig" than "fu**".

by the way, students hear EVERYTHING. they know more things than adults in some cases. we aren't livin' in wonderland.

Ah. You were pi**ed off. That's different then. It's OK to use vulgar language in that kind of situation.

it isn't OK, but you can NEVER stop it from happening, no matter how hard you try! swearing is everywhere and thats that. havent you been on the streets in korea late night? geez.. its in every sentence. also, its a natural response for a lot of people, not all, when you express anger. so, you never swore out loud and someone heard you? I don't say "friggin", but occasionaly I'll say "freakin". I do admit it's freakin lame, though. F*ck is much more appealing to the palate.

My daughter says it constantly...alternating with "like."
As in:

"Like I was so freak'n late to freak'n class the freak'n teacher like told me to like go the the freak'n office and I like had to freak'n wait around and then like talk to the freak'n principal and he was totally like, you need to like get to class on time and I was like ok, it totally like really freak'n sucked..."

It's like Johny Dangerously...fargin bastiges, etc, which is funny...but more like the happy valley utah mormon/idaho poofs gosh darn dang...jeeezzz..., which isn't.

But I love the word "Freak"...as in Hunter S Thompson running for president on the Freak platform...

Better to be pi**ed off then pi**ed on, which happen to me, once. A little one couldn't wait for me to finish he went behind me, tears down his face, mian, mian, (sorry, sorry). Luckily, I was at my subway stop and a five minute walk home. Oh, well... life goes on....I just hope it never goes on me again....

I did use the term "frickin freezing" in a thread as a reference to the first Austin Powers movie.

I'm from Maine and "frig" is not uncommon to hear, but "friggin'" is heard much more often.

In the westernmost Canadian province of B.C. I've often heard "friggin'" as a polite substitute for the f-word. A more tame version also said is "flippin'"

And, interestingly...
Quote:
frig sl vi vt :
mastrbate (esp. females)

Do the Brits these days use the word in that sense?

So, the stereotype "English women are frigid" originally connoted a preference for self-love over intercourse? or... the absence of frig?

I've heard friggin' as a substitute for f*ckin
but it sounds stupid to me

If I feel the need to substitute it would be with freakin

but usually I just say f*ck it, and use the word I want, or avoid cursing all together.
