we are looking for a laptop
at least :
1.3 GHz
256 Mb
40 Gb
what sort of price should i be looking at ? new and used ?
Saw a 'millenium' in carrefour ? - are they a respected brand ? or as I suspect, is carrefour certainly not the place to buy a laptop ??

saw a couple of Hewlit Packards when I went at the weekend
saw a refurbished one for 1.5 million,
2.8 GHz
512 RAM
60 GB
i was thinking a laptop with these specifications would be much more expensive ????
whats the deal with refurbished laptops anyway ?
also saw A HP brand new with the same specs except 1.7 GHz for a shade over a million won....also a good deal I thought ?
anyone had any good/bad experiences with HP laptops ?
do you think these deals seem to be good value ?

Laptops are a funny thing and a whole whack of factors go into the cost. Here's my take:
- You're paying for portability because no matter what laptop you get, spending the same amount of money on a desktop will get you a hell of a lot more computer.
- When you accept the above, decide how portable a machine you want. If you only want to drive it on Sundays you can get a bigger one with a 15 inch screen, 512 ram, over 2 ghz, etc., for peanuts.
- If you want a travel buddy that you can bring everywhere then you'll want a sub-notebook with a 10.4 inch screen, or a tablet that'll slip into your pocket -- you'll have to pay a quite a bit more for decent specs from a subnotebook.
As for me, I have a kickass desktop for my main computing needs so when I get around to buying my portable unit (which in my mind, is just an mp3 player with word processing capabilities) I'll be going for specs similar to what you posted (except 2.8 ghz, I'll be happy with more than 1) on a 10.4 inch or smaller and I'm reasonably sure that I'll get it (refurb) for less than 1.2. |

I just love the Toshibas I saw in yongsan today... screens are awesome, like the Sony models. Check into the Sony and Toshibas. If you don't plan to make it portable, go for one of the "desktop style" laptops.
Awesome. |

I have an HP 2.8ghz widescreen laptop. 40gig HD, 512megs of memory. Got in a bit over a year ago for $1,000 (after mail in rebates). Of course, this was in the US too. Also it's pretty hefty, weighing almost 8 pounds.
I've liked it but it has a mystery problem that comes up every once in a while I think its a hardware problem having to do with the power supply because it tends to happen if I am moving it while it's on. Basically, I get the blue screen of death followed by it not booting at all until I leave it alone for a while.
Best Buy found nothing wrong with it then tried to charge me for the spyware/virus scan they did on it. I promptly cancelled my extended warranty and got my money back on it.
Anyway, I still got a pretty good deal on it and overall I''m happy with it. |
