Because I can have multiple downloads with Azureus, Kazaa, listen to radio with media player, have a few other random programs open, and play Age of Mythology with no discernable slow down.
Why do you love your computer? |

When I first moved into the dorm here (the first dorm I lived in since undergrad 4 years ago), I came home that night to find my roommate (whom I hadn't met yet) already asleep with all the lights off at 9pm. I had no sheets or pillow for my bed, no phone (they didn't tell me that the phone provided to us would only recieve phone calls, or call around campus), no way to contact the outside world... even to my other friends in Seoul.
Was the second most isolated I've ever felt (the first being when I was homesick at Boy Scout camp).
That night I ended up taking an Ambien to go to sleep early, using a sweatshirt as a pillow (I tried to read for a little bit but was just too depressed), but the next day I went out and got a cell phone and a Korean power cable and Ethernet cord for my laptop, and ever since it has been my DVD player, telephone for calling family and friends back home, and even TV, when I download the latest Daily Show episodes. It's basically my oasis.
Without my computer things would've been very bad. |

| I hate my computer. its slow. has crappy specs. I've got to worry about spyware, adware, malware, viruses, worms, trojans, the registry and defraging it, and clearing the files. I'm sick of windows. I think I will make the switch to a mac when it switches to intel chips. Mostly like won't be able to afford one until then anyways, |

What chip do you have, Beav?
Have been thinking of upgrading to a new motherboard and a dual Intel 2.8 processor because they're not expensive and I run about 5 things at the same time (compressing video, watching a movie, surfing the web, Shareazza, and sometimes Photoshop or editing video). In most cases, I wouldn't say they're worth it, but in mine it would be.
One review blasted the dual-core chips because, "... most people only do one thing at a time."
Another review I read said, "Most people only do one or two things at a time because they've learned that it's all their computer will handle well. When given the opportunity to do more at once, people will take advantage of it. "
That holds true, because I often have to shut some programs down because they tax the system too much to run others (can't have Shareazza running while editing on Premiere). More ram helps, but CPUs really get taxed by doing such things. |

I love it because I can listen to decent music, download decent TV shows-I rarely switch the telly on here, make music and edit video, destress playing some dumb game, it helps me learning the Korean language as there are some great sites out there that are better than books.
I can burn and rip dvds, I can keep in touch with friends and family without running up stupid telephone bills or having to scurry of to Itaewon for phonecards, I can put great tunes on my MP3 player to listen to on the subway, I can prepare interesting stuff for the kids to do in class.
I'm thinking about building a monster machine next year as I'd like to get more into filmmaking projects and my current machine is a little slow for that. and my current machine will probably become a storage-server type thing. I'll just salvage my great Audigy 2 sound card and a few other bit and pieces.
I know a few people on here do video projects, what setup do you find best? Do you work with two monitors or make do with one? What is a good processor, memory, card setup to produce good semi pro quality material? |

I assume you're talking about the Pentium D 820 or a Xeon 2.8. Why stick with the Pentium D 820? You should really consider the 830 which is the second generation D chip and has all of the problems of the 820 worked out. The Xeon is just freakin expensive which is why I wn't be going with that chipset. |

Yeah, that's probably a good bet.
Haven't looked into them all that hard yet. Waiting a while for the verdict on what people think of them. Really don't "need" it at this point, anyway. |

If you have a healthy budget, I would go for the Pentium Extreme 3.87 series. You can find this chipset under the titles of Pentium EE or Pentium XE. The Extreme line is basically the same as the Pentium D series except that it also has added support for Hyper-Threading in addition to the Dual Core that the Ds have. In essence, it means that the information pipelines are doubled in the Extreme. The unfortunate thing is that I have only found an Extreme chipset in one online store and it was really costly at 1.2 million won. OUCH!
I'll be building a computer next month and I'll be using a Pentium D 830 chip so, I'll be able to tell you more about how good that chipset is at that time. |
