I bought a generic one ex display ages ago for 600000 won got some 'service too'. 19 incher very happy with it but much cheaper now I'm sure, the really good samsungs new were going typically for 1.2 million at the time.
Prices go down a lot on these types of products, I guess you could pick one up for a lot lot less now. I've got a friend going to Yongsan tomorrow, he can take a look if you want. I'm sure it'll be no problem. |

A new one could be picked up for as little as 350,000.

I'd like to chime in that I paid 370,000 won for a 17" LCD monitor today. Did I get jacked? I didn't know where else to go in Daejeon and can't make it to Seoul for a few weeks, but needed a monitor asap. |

17" LCDs start as low as 220,000.
19" can be had for 287,000
Of course, you may want to go with LG 17" for 282,000.
Or perhaps Samsung for 302,000. |

Yep they're the sort of figures my friend who went to Yongsan quoted. Damn these screens have come down in price a lot since I got mine. I might have to buy another flatscreen monitor and have a cool dual 19' monitor sytem going on! I'm very tempted. |

Yes, they are certainly cheap these days.
However, I do have my reservations about the screen quality. Do you know much about theis stuff kieth? I mean, with a CRT, one can buy a Samsung monitor and get a Sony Diamondtron screen...a nice screen (mine).
I don't know if the panels are mass-bought from a reputable dealer and not from Ding's LCD making joint somewhere in backwoods China, or if they fell off the LG truck and they are therefore having some kind of fire-sale on "slightly damaged" goods.
Response times, contrast ratios, dot pitch...these are to be considered, but with all of this being equal between the brands, why are some just so cheap, while others have indeed come down, but not to the floor yet.
Anyhow, I am a big CRT advocate still....my goods are cheap. |

When buying a monitor, especially an LCD, there are a couple of specs which you should be picky about nits, pixel response rate, and contrast ratio.
300cd/m (can get as high as 500cd)
Ϻ 500 : 1 (can get as high as 700:1)
ð 13ms (seen as low as 3ms)
Է 15 D-SUB / DVI (getting DVI is just good sense as it will allow you to hook up your monitor with a digital cable, thus giving you better performance)

If you do a lot of photo work on the pc, my advice is to stay clear. For decent picture representation the CRT is still king in my opinion.
Dead pixels are annoying too!
Apart from that they're great. |

Yes....CRTs are still superior in colors displayed as well. I really am an advocate of a CRT if you have the space. An LCD, IMO, is only for people living in close quarters.
CRTs have a finer DP, display more colors and as was said, have no dead pixels. They are more scratch-resistant as well. |

Most people in Korea live in small places. It makes sense to get a small monitor. I have no dead pixels that I can see on my monitor.
I used to have a cheapish 17 inch crt and it really hurt my eyes. The main reason I bought a flatscreen is that it is much easier on the eyes. I used to get headaches with my old CRT. I can spend hours screwing about on my computer now with my LCD and I never get tired eyes unless I stay up way too late.
My newer LCD is a lot smaller size wise so I can have it set back further and this reduces eyestrain too.
I'm not a serious power graphics user so an LCD monitor does me fine. I bought an LCD because after sitting in front of a computer at work back in the UK I thought I'd actually need to wear glasses. I hate glasses so I thought I'd save my eyes. |

I do prefessional graphics work all day as part of my job - photos, video, print, web, and tv. All my work computers have LCD's. Just do a bit of research before you buy, and if you have a need for it, get them regularly calibrated.
Once you have an LCD you will never go back, much like dialup vs broadband.
I like them so much that I bought them for my home computers, too. I play games all the time, and whenever someone goes on about 'ghosting' or colour depth I fire up DOOM3 (which is mostly in the dark), and they don't say much after that. |

Instead of rolling around in subjective arguments, I prefer to look at the facts regarding color depth, dot pitch, etc... .
A CRT will most likely hurt your eyes when you can't get the refresh rate over 60Hz. That means you have to lower the resolution and up the refresh....common sense. That, or pay a bit for a monitor that can do more. Cheap is cheap.
Once you have an LCD, you might not like it.
This is me....the compare with dialup vs. broadband is just wrong. Who wouldn't want a faster connection? However, about monitors, I bet that Doom 3 looks sweeter on mine.
Can't forget native resolutions too. Go buy a killer graphics card, only to find that at any other resolution besides 1024x768, it looks like total garbage. 3D, 2D...all terrible at a different resolution. Unless you have a 7800, you will want to change resolutions a lot for gaming, and this just can't be done well on an LCD. I'm good from 640x480 @120Hz to 2048 x 1536 @ 75 Hz. And let's not forget the .20 dot pitch.
LCDs are slowly coming around, but they are not the choice for professionals or even enthusiasts.
This is enough to not go LCD. |

Wow, you don't know anything about graphics cards, and you apparently don't know much about LCD Monitors, either???
Let me educate you, since you apparently are breathing a lot of hot air about something you neither own nor know much about.
LCD's have a "native resolution." Most 15" monitors (few buy these anymore) have a native resolution of 1024x768. 17" and 19" monitors are usually native at 1280x1024. At that resolution, and using DVI, the games look gorgeous.
Not choosing sides on which is better (I believe a good SONY non-LCD would be the way to go if you're crazy about games)... just educating you and correcting more of your biased know-it-all babble. I suggest you try some LCDs out instead of relying on old web articles and heresay. |
