Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.

Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.

Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said.

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

Chavez is dangerous. Its better if he's gone somehow. A nice villa in Cuba would be good.

Very interesting. I haven't read the link yet... doesn't it give any indication why he's singling out Chavez? I mean, if you- as an American media personality- are going to come out and advocate the return of political assassination as a policy, wouldn't you have a list of folks who would probably come before Chavez? Castro, perhaps? Kim Jong Il?

I know, I know, don't remind me- there's not much point in trying to analyze the logic of people who are clearly insane....

you could at least understand where Robertson is coming from when he says something like this.

Well, I guess so, if you were somehow able to overlook the fact that the guy is a Christian televangelist. It sort of flies in the face of 'turn the other cheek' and 'love the sinner, hate the sin' doesn't it?

And WE know he's a goofball, but when this sort of news breaks in the Muslim world, how do you think it's viewed? I mean, the guy claims to speak for a large number of devout Christian Americans, does he not? How is it we can say that mullahs should stop preaching hatred in Mosques, yet it's okay for a nutball like Robertson to go around saying that America should assassinate its enemies?

So much for 'hearts and minds', I guess...

Good Point.

Christianity, is about turning the other check even in the face of your enemies. Christ, died and rose again. (unless you have written and verifiable proof he didn't) (by the way, whats your time machine based on), Peter- Crucified. Paul- beheaded, Andrew- Crucified, James-Beheaded, Thomas- Stabbed, (((((Yeah!!! Cool 1 died of old age (sent into isolation) John - U THE MAN!!!!))))) Turning the cheek is the official line of the christian church. (Sad, they didn't always follow it or the muslims)

Pat Robertson needs someone to tell him he is profaning the name of his LORD when he says such things.

It certainly does. Robertson has always been a whack job.

Uhhhh, just because the guy claims to speak for a group of people doesn't mean he actually does. I'm a Christian and he certainly doesn't speak for me. I may agree with him on a few things, but this is definitely not one of them although I believe Chavez is a nut job himself.

So, are you saying that the mullahs who preach hatred speak for all Muslims? You might want to quite lumping all Christians into the same group.

I think that if you were to re-read what I wrote you'd find that we're actually on the same page.

I was simply expressing my sadness at how the perceptions of the rhetoric of nutballs on both sides of the religious divide contribute to our lack of understanding.

This just came up so I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but the title leads me to believe it'll be an interesting read:

Do not try to reason with religious fanatics about the Lord.

It was either Robertson or one of his colleagues (can't remember who exactly in the Jesus community), who, when the Guatemalan Army was hunting down and killing fleeing Indian refugees with helicopter gunships and miniguns in the 1980s, said that the Guatemalan military was doing God's work...

The best way to get Chavez is to stop giving that jerk attention.

and better yet why not invest in alternative energy so he is less important.
