On July 19th, 2006, poster VLCupper brought to our (Dave perusers) attention an article that was written in The Korean Herald.
http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=61636
Today, I received an email (as I am sure many of you did as well) from the associate editor of the Korean Herald, Chris Gelken, asking if I would be kind enough to post a link for him. Below is the link:
http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/SITE/data/html_dir/2006/07/19/200607190008.asp
Mr. Gelken has asked me to post this as well: "The Korea Herald print edition welcomes feedback and is working hard to generate debate on issues of concern to the community living and working here in Korea. We have a section for letters responding to Life&Community articles, or people wishing to bring our attention to something that deserves to be addressed [email protected] ."
On my note, I feel this is what a lot of us English teachers have waited for; a response and email address from someone that is in a position to disseminate our opinions and concerns to those that we have problems with. |

Was he the same guy who wrote the article last week where he generalized all ESL teachers on the basis of a couple posts on a message board and one illegitimate teacher?
I doubt it. If it is, he's castrated himself, because what you linked to was so mild, it contained almost no opinon at all.
And what a fu*cking idiot, anyway. Instead of pointing out that Korean journalists tend to take a couple posts and run with them, or that what someone says privately about their own opinions should not be used by Koreans as an indicator of professional standards, he admonishes US to stop posting on boards, or at least be less straight-forward.
Sure, that's good advice, but in a newspaper? No, he should be talking about how absurd it is to generalize about an entire group of people based on what a few people on the Internet post, and make mention of the fact that people are more likely to get on the Internet to complain than to praise, which leads to a disproportionate representation, and that most people who sit around posting on message boards are not what we'd consider "typical".
What an asshat.
I think I may email him tomorrow, but when I'm more sober.

I am just curious, where was this guy when the Korean media decided to make us all look like monsters by lying and stating a foreigner raped middle school girls at those English Towns. Where was he then?
why worry about regulating message boards when the media itself is full of crup? |
