External hard drive is read only! What is that all about?

Ok I have bought an external hard drive and plugged it all in. It has shown up on mydesktop but when I tried moving files to it it said that the hard drive can not be modified. I checked and it says that it is read only.... why?!

Do I need to do something or is it just not working?

I have a mac OSX10.3 by the way.

I am a wanna be geek that just dosnt have the knowledge please help me become more of a geek!
