A friend pointed out to me the totally lame-o "men seeking women" ads in the Seoul section:

http://seoul.craigslist.org/m4w/90523708.html

"me american man u sweet asian woman 18-30.u must want a family.i will help u get a green card"

With such solid English abilities, it's a wonder why this fellow isn't over here teaching English in a hagwon.

And this one is sure to win legions of fluent, university educated Korean women:

http://seoul.craigslist.org/m4w/86273126.html

"I would like to rescue a beautiful girl between 20 and 30 years of age from a third world country."

And Derrek wonders why people make fun of Americans... if your pick up line is calling the 10th largest economy a third world nation...

Well, a visit to Alabama would make you think America is the third world too. Being a first world nation doesn't mean every part looks first world.

Depending on how you measure it, Korea is 11th or 10th.

http://news.mongabay.com/2005/0718-worlds_largest.html

If you look at #10, India, it took a billion people to achieve that GDP versus the 48 million in Korea to achieve nearly the same GDP.

The point is english speaking Korean women in the guy's age range would not think of Korea as being a poor, backward nation one needs to escape from. They would probably find it insulting and would generally think of their nation as a land of pretty decent opportunity.

Granted we all probably know Korean women who will say they wanna get the hell out of Korea and a woman has no place in a company after age 28. However, they will also argue both sides of the coin. While they will spontaneously make that claim, if you were as the outsider to claim Korea was a third world nation and your best hope in life is to escape, they will suddenly become Korea boosters.

Or you could stroll over to the causal encounters board, and check out the guy looking for pre op trannies. I suspect a lot of the dross on Korean boards is just a few retards with nothing better to do.

no at koreas peak before the IMF they hit 11th! they have never been in the top 10!
I was here during the IMF! korean went from 11th place then IMF hit and they dropped down to the late teens.. now the papers and news is still saying koreas economy is not good , but they always say that! hahha
so I dont actually know where they rank now.. but I would guess its high
I mean samsung, lg, hyundae etc.. are world leaders! I would say they are probably back to around 11-or 12

Granted these are all Korean links... but the point is Koreans generally think of themselves as being in the top 10 and you're not going to get any trim telling a Korean woman her nation is in the same category as Ghana.

Ghana is an English speaking country, but Ghanians aren't granted E-2 visas for teaching English. Just thought you'd all like to know that.

The economy is great of course...the problem lies with the korean people and their behaviour. That is 3rd world.

Obviously, the "third world" craigslist post was ridiculous, but it's absolutely true that many of Korea's best and brightest are falling over themselves to get out of here. I'll leave it to you to decide why -- I'm sure everyone here has a few ideas -- but Koreans' actions speak for themselves on this.

I'm not just talking about hookers sneaking into America through some Canadian farmer's field. Not even adventurous young Korean women hanging out in Itaewon hoping to meet a nice foreign man. I mean families splitting themselves up for years to ensure a proper education for their children, former Korean professionals working at a chicken factory in rural West Virginia to obtain American permanent residency, 20-somethings saving every last won to qualify for Canadian investment visas, expectant mothers taking well-timed holidays in Hawaii, and so on.

I mean, quote all the statistics you'd like on Korea's supposedly high standard of living, but there are reasons the U.S. hasn't yet included the ROK in its visa-waiver program. People are still willing to go to astonishing lengths to leave this dynamic place.

Actually, Korea is concerned over its low fertility rate at the moment; it's hardly a first-world badge of honor. There was a short article on it in Thursday's Joong Ang. Apparently one of the main reasons Koreans aren't having more than one kid is the expense of properly educating a child in Korea. You can't rely on Korea's public education system, so it's off to the hagwon(s) with your children -- hope you've got a healthy bank balance. Also, an abnormally low birth rate isn't a reliable indicator of first-world status. Korea shares low fertility rates with not-quite-first-world Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. FWIW, America's birth rate is about 2 children per woman.
