Hello,
I was wondering if there are any job opportunities in science for someone w/ a B.Sc. and no knowledge of Korean. Where would one look for such a job? I was thinking perhaps editing manuscripts destined for US science journals, or lab assistant, etc.

Thanks a lot!

I can't answer your specific question, but so far I haven't found anything in Korea that's written in English that doesn't need need to be edited.

According to the 'book' I'm using (and all the kids are given), one of the replies to the question "How are you today?" is "Fuc**** terrible." LOL.

That's gorgeous. Reminds me of when I was tutoring a 14 year old Italian boy, we were in conversation, and he was talking about how much dog shit was in the park...kept saying shit. I didn't blink, but at some point, he broke down and asked me, "What is formal for 'shit' in English?"

Easy one for him, of course, once he learned it was Latinate to begin with...

BTW, I don't have an answer to the original post, but would be interested in knowing, myself. My wife has a PhD in Geophysics, and would also be interested in such gigs.

There was a job listed earlier in the summer for editors for a university translation center. Such jobs do exist, but probably take some research to find. I do some editing for our university translation center (everything is translated by Koreans, and edited by native speakers) and sometimes some scientific stuff crosses my desk. I am fairly sure the larger research oriented universities would have a need for editors.

Also, the academic journals here are at least partly written in English, and generally abstracts are written in English, also. You could get the names of Korean academic journals and contact them directly.

Why not enroll in a PhD program in a Korean university?

Look at the part where he (she?) says "and no knowledge of Korean".

Sorry about the need for the edit in the above post...didn't realize there was a local injunction against such language. I'd rail on about freedom of speech and even the scholarly tradition surrounding the word (etymology of curse words being a particular fave area of study of mine, and I'm fascinated by the fact that some words are accorded more power than others in all human language)...after all, if it was good enough for Jonathan Swift, I figure it'll do okay for me....but that's not the point, so no use railing. I appreciate the edit, and will take pains to use the proper euphemistic phrases in future.

Take care--p_g
