Two anecdotes:

1) A few years ago I was pretty close to a Korean family with kids (b & g) who were 10 and 8. When I slept over, I slept with the kids. In fact, the kids would often ask if they could sleep with me. The dad said kids often ask to sleep with an adult friend of the family if they like him/her.

I only found it strange for about 5 minutes. The strangeness stopped when I remembered I slept with my grandmother when I stayed at her house (until she died when I was 12).

2) Last week after my last class with a middle school group I gave the boys a ride home in my car. One of the boys in the back seat asked if he could come sleep at my apartment. In light of what the adult in the other anecdote had said, I responded, "Thank you."

It's probably only me, but I think there is a good deal of projection of dirty-minded Western thinking about sleeping together.

Mothers sleep with their sons here right up to their last year of elementry school, and maybe longer. I was a bit surprised when I visited a Korean friends home and found this to be the case.

Seems to be the norm and generally quite harmless.

In Japan it seems that there is a big gap between womens rights and men's rights. Men don't give their money to their wives the way they do here in Korea, and I'd say this leads to a lot of disempowerment, and emotional deprivation amongst Japanese wives. Maybe this is what sparks the illicit behaviour between the mothers and their sons. Gotta get their balls back somehow (figurativley speaking of course).

Interesting to read in the article that the hotline at help centers or whatever in Japan recieved and perhaps is still recieving calls from young Japanese men who have had sexual relations with their mothers. Wonder if some of the mothers got pregnant. If they were stupid enough to get it off with their sons, they were probably just as stupid enough to not take precautions.

In the west we got the motherf-ckers, but in Japan you got the sonf--kers.
