|
|
Today one of my favourite students informed me that the reason the air is polluted in Seoul is because the black smog from London and the white smog from Los Angeles comes to Korea and gets mixed in Seoul to make grey smog.
I actually laughed in his face (i'm such a good teacher).
Where did he get this misinformation? From a school textbook.
Anyone else come across this? |

I questioned him for a while to try and tip him from his smug little perch and out him as a fraudster, but no no, he'd got it from his social studies textbook. Seoul is one of the most polluted cities in the world because of London and L.A. Sounds about right. |

But Koreans are never at fault! It's always someone else's wrongdoing. Don't you know this by now?
(Don't get me wrong - Korea's great! Each day here reinforces my belief that suicide is indeed a tried and tested solution for relief.) |

Today I got the "Japanese are evil!" business from my middle school students, so I decided to tell them the truth about their estranged brothers to the north compared to the Japanese occupation as far as who has the better record of murdering South Koreans is concerned.
I dont think Japan was a nation of expansionistic saints by any means, but I was feeling a need to actually educate today.
Anyway, they all hate me now. |

We don't actually get black smog anymore in London, it was more of a Victorian thing. Most off the pollution in London is from the same source as LA, too many damn cars. Saying that Londons air is pretty fantastic compared with Seoul, at least there are loads more public parks and trees around to soak up some of these nasties particulants in the air.
Perhaps Seoul has been importing pollution from Western nations? Afterall he did say 'it gets mixed in Seoul'!
Sounds like complete and utter BS and it is. What he might have meant is that all the people burning charcoal and driving cars in Seoul make it the wonderfully polluted place it is. |

The black smog is (partly) from China, where coal is still burned by many households. The book should've blamed China, and even if it was wrong, few would be 100% sure whether it was wrong or not. LA and London, hah! |

He's 12 (korean). Sounds like one of those things that kids remember and get mixed up about, but it just sounded so typical that i can't help but think that sadly, he's not making a mistake at all. |

Well, that would be true if Koreans didn't burn coal or diesel fuel. All the construction going on also has a thing or two to do with the dust. And the gray haze that covers this country clears up as you get closer to the coast, so that's obviously not from China.
What's next? Claims that all the polution in Canada comes from the US? |

So by some fantastic confluence of events the easterly wind that brings the LA smog stops exactly over Seoul as does the westerly wind that brings the London smog.
Super! |

Unbelievable. Need to get a copy of that textbook, have that crap translated, and send it off to the U.S. and British embassies. Write a letter to the publisher of the textbook, too. I can't believe they get away with publishing that shit.
Koreans complain about the education system, but nothing is done about it. This just reinforces my intent to homeschool my children (when I have some).
Teaching ignorance to impressionable young children. Bravo to the Korean education system. The country is really going to go far. |

Instead maybe they should teach them history out of a best selling book and just assume it is all true. |
