Hey, I've been burning CDs like mad for the last week with no problems. Yesterday I tried burning an apparently copy-protected disk image to CD which I had downloaded (the Rosetta Stone app). The disc was in there for like 20 minutes before I realized nothing was going to happen, I ejected it and it came out hot. Now my CD burner won't burn anything... it tries, but it makes strange noises and doesn't finish.

Now I had tried a couple different pieces of software to burn the disc image, which was a CCD file, including ISOpen and ULTRAiso. The long burn was with one of those two. Then I found the CloneCD program which I shoulda used before, but discovered my CD burner was non responsive to it. I assume either one of the software installations or the really long burn screwed up my CD burner. It still works fine for reading CDs.

Can anybody tell me what happened?

PS: I had a 3 year extended warranty, it expired sometime about last week.

Bingo.

I had to replace a combo drive recently because it wouldn't burn any more (but it'd do everything else; I guess burning is the first thing to go).

OK, next question. Is it cheaper to buy electronics in Korea, or buy them online and have them shipped? Or, should I wait until I get a chance to take a vacation to another country in the area? And, is it possible to buy second-hand electronics anywhere with a good selection? I saw 2nd hand laptops at Yongsan but prices sucked and I really just want to buy a CD burner or a whopping external hard disk.

PS: I have rosetta stone Korean 1 and 2, for anybody who provides one of the aforementioned devices!

LG CD burners can be bought for 30,000 new. Assuming you could find one for free overseas, airmail postal shipping would use most of that up.

I picked up the same one (I believe it does DVD-RAM as well) for $58 CDN + GST/PST.

Head to your closest store and ask for "LG Super Multi Drive". It's a safe guess that they're pretty ubiquitous.
