I have been using my given name for teaching in the Hagwon for the past four years...some teachers prefer to use Mr. or Miss...whatever...

For the public schools...which I am going into...what do most of you prefer to use?...What is preferable for you, or easiest for the kids?

First name + Teacher, or Teacher. Sometimes Monkey Teacher or Jangu Teacher. They could call me Prince Albert if they want as long as they listen and do their work.

In the hogwon I let them call me by my first name. At my current public school I'm Ms family name or Family name teacher. My family name is very easy for koreans to say and also it add some distance between myself and the students.

I'm the same. Most just call me "Teacher. Some of the kids call me by my first name. I don't care what they call me as long as they're polite about it.

I always used to tell kids not to call me "teacher." If they study abroad and address their teacher that way (unless they're in kindergarten, I suppose), they'll be laughed at.

When I teach adults I go by my first name, but with kids I use Mr. Family Name. It's a good culture point to teach.

at a hagwon they call their teachers "sonseignim" but in English it isn't really normal to address your teacher that way. Most hagwon teachers and even my Canadian public school co-workers use their first name. Kids should learn the proper terms in the language so my kids call me Mr."Wrong" at the public school. The other two Canadians think this is to "formal" but actually it's not.

In elementary I think I remember calling my teachers "teacher". Did I really call them that or is that one of those 'fake' memories? In high school, I addressed my teachers as "Sir", "Miss", or "Ma'am".

I go by a mispronounced version of my first name. I agree that it's probably better if I went by "Miss (mispronounced version of my family name)" but that would mainly serve to make me feel older. Embarassed Not to mention constantly remind my students that I'm single (something that they think I really should have done something about long ago).

C'mon, they don't really call you Monkey Teacher and Jjangu Teacher, do they??? Confused

BTW, I'd add "...and as long as they pay me on time" to these lists of conditions posters have mentioned.

Yeah, sometimes the more playful ones do. It doesn't matter to me. They used to call me Uh-huh Teacher when I first started because I'd often say "Uh-huh" when they gave a correct answer. They thought it was hysterical.
