OK, this is the bi point I refuse to concede about respecting other people's customs and wishes and stuff.

Most of the Korean public restrooms I've been in have signs to the effect of: "Don't put toilet paper in the toilet."

Then they have a small trash can, usually with a hinged lid I guess, that you're supposed to put your toilet paper in once you've wiped your rear.

Does this not seem disgusting to anyone else?

I checked with a Korean coworker, and that is indeed where they put the papers.

And then these trash can lids get smeared with shite.

Unbelievably unhygenic.

Oh, and on a related note, which end of the pit toilets are you supposed
to face? The raised end or the other one?

I'm guessing the raised end, but I really don't know for sure.

Again, I asked my buddy and he said he didn't know either, but that he prefered the raised end.

Sorry bout the wierd post, but the picture of the day thread made me think about it again.

Not as disgusting as a backed up toilet filled to the brim because Joe Waegook had moral objections over putting his paper in the can.

In a lot of places, the plumbing pipes are very old, and can't handle tissue- or so I'm told. I suspect it's actually got more to do with the squat style toilets than anything else.

BTW- face the end with a hood.

Yea, I think its pretty disgusting too. I feel bad for the cleaning ladies who have to empty that, as if cleaning a toilet was bad enough. They are pretty common. I noticed them everywhere, even in my offices restrooms. I havent asked anyone here where they put their used TP; I may not want to know.

Not to be crude or filthy, but Ive dropped some big loads in my life. If the plumbing can handle it, then it should be able to handle a little bit of tissue.

There have been many threads on this, and it's been pointed out many times that it happens in many different places around the world.

(BTW can you guess what my 'word of the day' is?)

Nope. As a matter of fact, you might be surprised to learn that I've never heard of that word 'restraint' before...

but probably not.

Ooh, thanks.
Good to get confirmation.

Manlyboy, I'm gonna have to go with ubum on this one, if I have to use much paper, I'll flush more than once, but I ain't using the can. Not unless ajumma's standing over me with a toilet plunger waiting to whackme on the head.

Running a business may include occasional bathroom plunging.
I'm sure they can handle it.

A former co-worker of mine shared this no-poo-tickets-in-the-tin edict of which you speak. The toilet would spill over with butt mud at least once a month and we had to resort to making guerilla incursions into the hagwon next door like whitey hobos until it got fixed.

We didn't like him very much.

You should be glad you are a man and don't get to see colours other than brown. In the ladies, there is always this other coloured papers in the basket and those are truly gross.

jinglejangle has a good point - multiple flushes

They should teach multiple flushes instead of tossing it in a can. But maybe they are trying to save water, who knows.

toilets blocking because of paper is a myth, just like fan death. toilet paper these days disintegrates into the water. your average turd is a far more difficult thing to get down the pipes than a piece of disintegrating tissue.

flush it. if the toilet blocks, it was going to anyway. the pipes are poor sometimes - but its the faeces that block it not the paper.

yeah, the toilet paper thing is totally bogus. a long time ago koreans had even crappier toilet paper and it couldn't be flushed, but apparently now it doesn't matter.

I'd love it that when i go into a public toilet some korean person hasnt treated the western style toilet like a whole in the ground and covered everything and not even flushed.
