Jeeeez, there are signs all over the airport about drugs and death penalty. Assuming he was carrying (and that load looks like dealing rather than using) it's is not as if he did not know.
It's also illegal to have sex with small boys in Taiwan - but if a Saudi did so, should he be let off because it is a practice "overlooked" in his home country? |

Right. I will argue that drugs are good for you when you are young, and you should experiment and have a fucking good time.
But I've no sympathy for this cretin, if he's been there several years he knows the law of the land. The sheer arrogance of some westerners astounds me, they seem to think time and time again, that their nationality and English speaking status is going to bail them out. Perhaps someone needs to be made an example of. |

Right. I will argue that drugs are good for you when you are young, and you should experiment and have a *beep* good time.

So you think he should get the death penalty then? |

Speaking for myself(not Butterfly):
I am against the death penalty, and have joined campaigns against it. However, if Taiwan has the death penalty for smuggling drugs, then they have as much right to execute a drug smuggler as Canada has to throw a drug smuggler in jail for six months. |

I could not think that as I am opposed to capital punishment. |

Well, I guess that news takes all the surprise out of this year's Darwin awards.
I'm not pro-capital punishment, but sometimes it almost seems like it's an elaborate form of suicide... |

So no problems with Texas then? |

'as much right to execute' does not equal 'I'd like to see executed'. |

My question was framed in the right way. He is opposed to the death penalty but believes that Taiwan has a right to execute convicts in accordance with its own laws. I wonder whether he believes the same is true of Texas (i.e no problem with regards to Texas having as much right to execute...) |

It's not hypocritical to have a stronger opinion on a country closer to your own, with the same language and similar cultural background than some other place that obviously doesn't operate in quite the same way. Once you start asking 'well then, why do you/don't you care about country x or state y?' you've opened up a subject with no end. |

I have a problem with both Taiwan and Texas imposing the death penalty - I think it's disgusting, perverse and pointless. I'd like to see it stopped immediately, worldwide.
However, I don't believe this kid deserves any particular support. He was caught and will be punished. Hopefully he won't be killed - and hopefully nobody else will be either. But he doesn't deserve any special treatment, and people shouldn't campaign to save him specifically. |

I was speaking rhetotically, I don't believe he or anyone should get the death penalty. But as I am able to spare more sympathy for the family who die from starvation in Niger than for the drunken chav joy rider who gets killed from driving dangerously, I'll spare my sympathy for people more deserving of it than this fool. Probably he won't get the death penalty, because Canada will step in and plead his case. |
