I brought some of my computer here with me last month when I came, but decided to buy a new hard drive as my main drive three weeks ago. I like to run WinMX and another file sharing program in the background overnight. Was running it at the same time as the problem, and they were downloading and uploading like a gig of files at a time. I had my computer on for a few days straight, and began to watch some CNN news videos on the net. I start hearing this weird HUMMM sound for a few second. I thought it was coming from my speakers. Later, I watched a movie on the computer, and my computer sort of paused when it loaded the videos. Just for about 5 seconds, then they loaded and ran. I took the side of the case off, and found the sound is definately from the hard drive. I turned it off, let it cool overnight, backed stuff up, and havent heard the sound again. I ran the windows drive test in full mode and it came out ok. Was reading online and think maybe my drive got too hot? That or it is going to die soon. I have the side of the case off now.
Should I pull the drive and take it to Youngsan where I got it? Will they just change it for me? The drive brand says MAXTOR. |

Well first off the amount of data that's being stored or moved about shouldn't make any difference to the HD. It's all data. How old is the HD? Sometimes my HD will make a humming sound when it first spins up or if it's a little lose in the drive bay the HD spinning will create some vibration that will rattle a little if it's not screwed on tight to the HD bay. If the HD is new and the problem persists I would consider exchanging it for a new one. Better to be safe than sorry. |
