In a few threads here ther have been some very good and some terrible things said about Compaq laptops.

Does anyone have any experience with Compaq's EVO line, more specifically the EVO n610?

Considering whether to pick up one fo these refurb or a refurb IBM T-30 (the T-30 is slightly more expensive but I've travelled with one and found it to be excellent in every way except battery life- It's real P4 power hog).

In attempting to answer my own question I've come across reviews, some of which are worth reading:

Compaq does not care about you wrote:
The fan and the SD card reader never worked. So, finally when I could afford not to have it for awhile I took it back to CompUSA to get it serviced. The laptop was sent back to Compaq since it was still under warranty. 2 weeks later I get my laptop back unfixed and without the original power supply cord...it was the wrong type. So I immediately turn around and take it back to CompUSA. They apoligize and promise to rush it. At this point, I'm upset that I did not have a computer for 2 weeks and still it was not fixed. So I call the customer service number(800-474-6836) to complain. I'm told "sorry" that there is nothing else that Compaq could do for me. When I ask to speak to a manager, again I'm told that no one is available, but someone will contact me in 24-48 hours. I'm issued a case number. No one ever calls me back. After 2 additional weeks, I get my laptop back. This time the fan, SD card reader are fixed and I have the correct power supply. Except now all my personal files and aftermarket software has been deleted. Again, I call Compaq, give them my case number and again I'm told "sorry" but there is nothing they can do for me. Again I ask to speak with a manager and again I'm told that someone will reach me in 24-48 hours. And again, no one calls me back. I was never told by anyone to back up my software and files. It was a hardware and not a software problem after all.

i had plenty of problems with my presario laptop. had to have it serviced many times. They even removed my norton antivirus which i had a subscription to. Unfortunately I had no disk for norton and I couldn't redownload it. I was pissed. after eight months i got my money back.

I had a refurb Compaq and it was trash. I'd go with the IBM any day.

I've had two Compaq laptops over the years. The first, a 386, was first class and led me to believe that they were the Rolls-Royce of laptops.

The second, bought in 99, an Armada range was a heap of carp - two disk replacememnts in two years.

Next I bought was an IBM - excellent and would not hesitate to buy another.

I am currently using two laptops, one a Toshiba (bought in US) which is OK, nothing special. The other is a Samsung Sens M35 - again, OK, but IBM is number 1 for me.

After using the latest Toshiba Satellite and an IBM T30 at work, I have to agree with you, Wrench and Wangja: IBM deserves its reputation and its higher price tag. Wonder how things will change in that dept now that they are Lenovo.

Annyway thnaks for the replies- even if the EVO is one of the better Compaq lines I'm going to avoid the company altogether.

I used a Compaq Presario 2700 for 3 1/2 years, and I never had any problems with it. Whenever I would test it on Pcpitstop or other similar sites, it always got really good ratings.

Actually the IBM thinkpads are staying the same. Lenovo doesn't want to loose customers.
