My friend, George, has been working in Korea for about 6 years. He's now got a really good uni job. But awhile back, he applied for a job at the YongSan army base and they are now in the process of hiring him.
But the problem is that he now feels torn between his school and the job at the base.
He knows that the base job means more stability for him and his family (korean wife and 2 kids), but it is part time (for now) and he will be on probation for a year.
But the teaching job is more money and the uni position seems stable enough (though I feel a tad sketchy about the 3-year period of employment).
I didn't know what to tell him about this and he feels very lost.
But what makes it worse is that he has an E2 right now and he was suppose to have an C3 to apply for the position.
I'm afraid that once he changes his job, the personnel officer will find out and renege on the job offer, leaving him in the cold.
Has anyone ever made the switch from teaching to DoD and what was your experience.
I would like to give him some concrete advice
please help?.... |

A fellow I know who works as a intell analyst on Yongson indicated that the US government was downsizing the military presence in Korea. I hope your friend considers that as part of the whole equation. Might be in 2 years or so that his job might just be riffed, or downsized.
At least it would not hurt to ask.
Hmmm... lets see... mindless US govt. employee... with benifits, damn nice benifits at that... acess to all the Yongson PX goodies...possible stable long term employment... possible of lateral transfer if his employment stateside if his position gets slagged.
Uni Job... well nice when your young, but not always the wise road for the long term.
I would say it would depend on if he was considering a long term view, or short term view. For the short term take the Uni. Providing the job is going to be around for awhile and he wants a long term employment without the contractaul hassles then go with the government. |

He decided to keep his uni job. He figured that since the army IS downsizing and that Yongsan IS relocating outside of Seoul, it WOULD be a smart move to stay there.
Hey, it is not too stable, but it is more stable than a hokwon job, right?
But, here is the sly part.
He got his ration control plate today and went on a shopping spree before he handed it back to his boss.
