I met a Korean girl through a co-teacher of mine. We got along well, went for coffee once and to a piano recital in Daegu once. Then, after not having heard from her for a few months, I learned she had gone to Seoul and became a police officer.
Nearly 1 1/2 years go by and I receive an e-mail a couple of days ago. She is asking me how to find ESL jobs in Korea, if I remember her, how's life etc....
I write her back and say things are great blah blah blah, and ask her about the cop thing, is it true? Is she quitting? Is it info for a friend?
Yesterday I get another e-mail and she tells me she is still a cop in Changwon working with the immigration department and asked me to pose as a teacher lacking a proper degree and try to get a job so she can arrest the recruiters who will hire me and fake a degree or the paperwork or whatever.
It goes against every grain in my body. I know the fake degree thing has been done to death, but this is a bit of a new wrinkle.
What do you think? I am not going to help her, and am shocked she would ask. I will decline politely, likely saying I don't want to have a negative reputation if I should choose to use one of those recruiters in the future. |

Don't get involved. You never know who they might be dealing with. You might wake up some morning with a horses head on your bed! |

F[u]ck that. Maybe if we were talking about child prostitution or slave trafficking it would be a noble act, but let`s get real here.
Also, look at her trying to use you. Oh, hey, sorry I completely disappeared and you didn`t hear from me again until I needed something from you. It`s all good!
It AIN`T all good, beitch! |

And doing ths would be a noble act as well. The government is a legitimate authority. And, corrupt though it may be in parts, the Korean government is a just government. Supporting the rule of law is noble in and of itself. OP: I say go for it, but make sure that your friend provides you all of the stamps and official immigration permissions to do this legally (i.e., permission from your employer and make sure that this is added to your visa or Alien Registration Card). And make sure you get paid in the range of 50,000 won/hour for ALL time you are engaged in this activity (preferrably paid upfront).
Having said that....

I also tend to agree with these sentiments. |

Hmmm. One needn't dig very far to find the flaws in that statement. |

I'll let others pick apart the inherent legitimacy of governments. I will say that if I were in the OP's shoes I would do it as long as I was getting paid and had some assurance directly from immi (shouldn't be hard to get, given the setup) that getting compensated for police assistance would be done in a legitimate taxable form in agreeance with my visa. TO violate an immigration statute in this situation would just be silly. I have no problem busting recruiters or hagwons that hire illegals. I wouldn't want to business with or work for one that did. SImilarly, I eschew American employers that hire illegals. I personally don't want to trust my paycheck with someone like that. |

Is she hot and single?
Do you have any affinity towards the crooked little rat-barstud recruiters that would be getting busted?
What sort of payment will you be getting for your services?
What sort of guarantee do you have that you won't get busted or entangled in legal proceedings yourself? |

Interesting question. Is entrapment a legal reality in Korea? Because that is what it sounds like you would have been a part of.
Sounds like you made the right choice. |

I'd love to see how they'd set this one up.
"Uhh, Hi my name is Johnny and I have a fake degree. Will you hire me?"
On second thought: Would it be entrapment if he pretended that he didn't have a University degree and applied for jobs but never mentioned anything about faking documents or whatever, leaving the schools and recruiters rope to hang themselves with by faking his documents? Morals aside, it sounds like a fun job. |
