Does any FT out their have keys to their hogwan?

Does any FT have a hogwan provided A/C unit in their housing?

How about other great benefits you are actually receiving or heard of others getting? (Hey, it's time to write a better contract for a one year extension.)

I didn't know anybody who didn't have an AC unit. The best benefit I knew of was a guy whose school paid all of his utilities, including cable.

I had an AC unit but the other FT at my school didn't! I also knew one guy who got all his utilities paid and that was a sweet deal because he ran his AC full blast all winter. His house was the neighborhood haven.

No key, but I do have a/c in my hagwon and in my apartment.

Also, I've gotten a free bike from my boss, which then got stolen, and he offered to replace. I also got a couple items of furniture upon request, a free K/E dictionary, several meals out, and near complete control of teaching decisions. That stuff isn't in contract, though.

I'm mystified as to why you'd want keys to the school, and A/C is standard in most teacher housing. Personally, I'd write in something about a better schedule or more pay.

My friend is the head foreign teacher and has keys to his hogwan. Trust me, it's the last thing you'd want.

Yeah, keys = more responsibility. If something goes missing, you are an automatic suspect too.

I had keys to my last hagwon. I didn't have much else though.
I would have been happy just to receive regular pay. Laughing

Keys to the hogwan?!?! Good Gawd! Who would want that? That sounds like a punishment to me.

Was this guy a friggin' eskimo? I hope you meant summer. Wow! That'd be one tough Canuck.

Very Happy When I came to Korea, years ago, it was summer and really hot. I went to work at a big hogwan and none of the FTs had an air conditioner. This is a small city, and many of my Korean friends have no AC. Even the wonjangnim at my current hogwan has no AC.

Today, I told her that according to my internet research, many FTs have AC. She said "Yes, I think we should all have AC." So, today she went out and bought big upright AC units for everybody including herself. They'll be installed on Sunday. I had purchased my own already, so I will get a cash reimbursement from the hogwan on Monday.

Thanks to all for your comments on this. Very Happy

I have an air con and keys to the school. The good thing about the keys is that sometimes I was the first to let myself in during the vacation hours and we (my boyfriend included) can use the computers whenever we like. No added responsibilities.
Last place I worked--a kindergarten, I had the above two plus all utilities paid except cable for internet.
Another benefit is that my boss makes delicious food and brings it for dinner or lunch. The only problem is I only get 15 minutes (including my regular 10 minute "break" to eat it.

Yeah my place has an A/C unit. It's not the BEST A/C I've ever had but oh well. It will do. I can't say I'm perk laden, other than my schedule tends to be easy at time. At worst, I work 4-8:55. I'm generally left alone and not micro managed. They pay for my cable and my phone. All 'n' all if you get a clean apartment with A/C and they pay you on time and you don't have to work weekends, that's about as close to heaven as you can get in Korea.

Dear friends,
this is exactly why ex-pat teachers are being delegitimized and marginalized. As long as we avoid responsibility, we are hardly in a position to complain about being side-lined and left out of many decisions.

Sorry, just my two-cents.

Back to topic, perks are almost as important as pay "these days." 1.9, 2.2, 2.3, it's not so much of a difference. The most important perk, if you can call it that is a pleasant work environment where everyone is respected and feels comfortable and welcome. Sad to call that a perk, but, before AC or free lunch, that would be my number one choice of something extra.
