Korea to Send US$30 Million in Aid to United States
Korea on Sunday shamed critics by deciding to send US$30 million in aid including private donations to help in the rebuilding of areas in the U.S. South devastated by Hurricane Katrina. It will also dispatch a 50-man rescue team to the area together with emergency relief supplies under a team headed by Vice Foreign Minister Lee Tae-shik, who has been tentatively named Korean ambassador to Washington. Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan announced the measures after a Cabinet meeting.
Korea's contribution is reportedly the largest aid offer behind Qatar's $100 million pledge. In Asia, China and India have pledged $5 million each, Japan $500,000, and Australia $10 million. The government will meet with the nation's business groups and religious leaders to discuss the exact size of the government and civilian aid package on Monday. Deployment of military forces was not on the agenda since there has been no request from the U.S. If there is, the government will discuss the matter with the National Assembly, he said.
Meanwhile, things appeared calmer after the mass deployment of troops to New Orleans on Saturday, the sixth day since the hurricane. Military helicopters hovered over the city all day, while heavily armed troops and police patrolled the streets. There were no signs of looting or violence, and the evacuation of refugees was almost complete. Only a few people remained at the citys Convention Center and Superdome, which had turned into a living hell for thousands of refugees trapped there. But the siege-like atmosphere created by the massive military presence gave rise to fresh anger.
There was a widespread sense that the city's African Americans were left stranded for five days while the city was allowed to descend into anarchy because authorities concentrated on rescuing and protecting more affluent Caucasians. The Rev. Yun Jeong-su (4 , who spent four days on the second floor of his church in downtown New Orleans, said, "The rescue operations concentrated on the west side, where white people are concentrated. There was also a lot of police deployed and almost no looting. On the other hand, in the black neighborhood in the southeast, there was almost no police seen, and only black people could be seen wandering the streets." It was not clear whether the U.S. government intentionally discriminated against the African American community, but New Orleans is transforming into a powder keg that could ignite deeply rooted racial tensions in U.S. society. |

Seems more like they were trying to shame the Japanese. 500000$ from Japan?! Japan is the second largest economy in the world, for heaven's sake! I think it's insulting--and I'm not even American. |

| we appreciate the help! even though collectively our private and public sector should and can take care of this if we really push the right buttons, our economy is strained right now, for a number of reasons which is a whole other discussion but any help is appreciated, as americans we are starting to find out that we cant have our cake and eat it too(ie...bigger cars then we cant support, and all the unneccesary amenities we cling too) especially when a human crises comes up and we need that money for something like this, but i digress, the racial coin is more of an issue worth delving into, first off new orleans is 2/3rds black and the poorest neighborhoods are generally in the lowest altitude area! so most of the suffering was done in those parishes, its a terrible tragedy but i think youll find that when there is a natural disaster like every other event, the poor get screwed, Race was an issue no soubt but not as big as money. I love new orleans, it was a unique city to the US, a lot of our cities are cookie cutter types, like the one I live in, New Orleans has a lot of historical and culturalvalue for us, but right now the most important thing is the thousands dying, I am hopeful that this tragedy will help americans to be even more sypathertic to causes around the world, and stop worrying about money and power as much, of course money and power is one of the grounding forces with which this country was founded |

most of that "looting" is ppl getting food and medical supplies.
the average person is not dragging off big screen tvs (that probably won't work if they were underwater). |
