So are traffic fumes which are also destroying the atmosphere and life on earth as we know it.

I know which I see as less of a problem.

REALLY! Rolling Eyes Tests done on sheep by the side of the highway by a university showed the damage down by lead based petrol in my country. It is possible the smoke from cars, lead based or other do more damage than you imagine. My first year here, it was winter, I could taste the metals in my mouth for at least 3 weeks and more. (sulpher, etc.) After a while I couldn't, I got used to them. Is smoking really killing us or all the other crap we absorb? (by the way, I don't smoke, unless you consider sucking up exhaust fumes and other).

tests done on everyone have proved that smoking is disgusting, "angry- monkey-with-poo-in-his-hand, so look out" behavior.

Driving makes sense; smoking doesn't. Analogy crushed.

Our ancestors spent aprox. 500,000 years in their caves breathing the smoke from wood-fueled camp fires.

How does doing something that will cause a disaster for life on Earth make sense?

Sure, we need transport, but do we really need 6.0 liter engines in our SUV's?

The world today runs on oil and there are a lot of very powerful people who want to keep it that way. And sell us more of it if possible. Even if it means their grandchildren will pay for the consequences.

I agree smoking is pretty disgusting. But as a problem it pales to insignificance compared to the burning of fossil fuels.

I can't remember where I read this but there was a study that showed that smokers that live in areas with high concentration of smog are three time more likely to get lung cancer than smokers that live in non-smoggy areas and non-smokers who live in smoggy places.

I am with you on the evils of fossil fuel use, but incidentally I just came across this article that suggests that cigarettes are more polluting than diesel exhaust :

No offence, but your poor English means folks haven't understood your question I think.

I've just quit smoking. Quitting anything is easy if you're determined enough. In my life, I've quit heroin and cigs, so I'm qualfied to comment on addictions/quitting I reckon. Don't be fooled by the theory that says tobacco is more addictive than heroin. Total horsesh1t. Quit now.

Smoking kills 10,000 people per day worldwide. I agree it's disgusting, but there's nothing quite like a good smoke after food.

You missed my point pretty badly. Let me elaborate:

Driving makes sense. It has a purpose. It takes you from point A to B, faster than it would take by foot or horseback. It's impossible for many people to "quit" driving -- not because of some physical addiction, but because they need it to get to and from work/school/grocery store etc.

Smoking, on the other hand, involves sticking a cyclindrical tube in your mouth and inhaling toxic chemicals that will eventually transform your lungs into a black shriveled bag the size of my two fists. It doesn't serve a purpose, as far as I can see, other than to help certain individuals to "fit in". Nothing a bit of mirror-gazing can't remedy.

Smokers often use driving to point out the hypocrisy of non-smokers who criticize smoking. This is a cliche and frankly, pretty lame. Rather than trying to defend themselves with weak analogies, smokers should turn their energy to quitting, or hang their heads in shame and let us non-smokers poke them with sticks.
