The Nation -- Finally, we have discovered the roots of George W. Bush's "compassionate conservatism."

On the heels of the president's "What, me worry?" response to the death, destruction and dislocation that followed upon Hurricane Katrina comes the news of his mother's Labor Day visit with hurricane evacuees at the Astrodome in Houston.

Commenting on the facilities that have been set up for the evacuees -- cots crammed side-by-side in a huge stadium where the lights never go out and the sound of sobbing children never completely ceases -- former First Lady Barbara Bush concluded that the poor people of New Orleans had lucked out.

"Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this, this is working very well for them," Mrs. Bush told American Public Media's "Marketplace" program, before returning to her multi-million dollar Houston home.

Does anyone have a slightly more neutral account of her visit? If this is true, it is pretty shocking.

How about some broader context?

Quote:
Then she added: "What Im hearing which is sort of
scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is
so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you
know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she
chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

Confused Oh, actually it's even worse.

Given her callous comments on the death of American soldiers in Iraq, it's hardly surprising.

She and her husband and their family represent the worst of America -- Eastern, snobbish, classist trash, who owe their "positions" to nothing they have achieved on their own.

If the old **** had any class, she'd be ashamed of herself.

What did she say? Only I saw her on Larry King and she was very supportive of them. She is a hardfaced cow though.

Maybe its just a case of diminishing expectations, but I am more impressed with Bush sr in retrospect than I was at the time.

Junior makes his dad look positively moderate, pragmatic, and non-partisan by comparison. I'll take it a step further. I am more impressed with Reagan in retrospect.

I, too, remember the good old days when satire was based on Dan Quayle and "potatoes."

Remember Vanna White, by the way? "Because of why?"

"...why should we hear about body bags, and deaths, and how many, what day it's gonna happen, and how many this or what do you suppose? Or, I mean, it's, it's not relevant. So, why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"
-Barbara Bush March 18, 2003
Good Morning America

The conservatives on here are gonna say "Blah, blah, blah, it's out of context, wahhh, wah, wah.", but seriously, what kind of twit talks like that?
Beautiful mind, sheesh.

I will third or fourth that. Daddy Bush is looking better all the time in retrospect. At the time, I thought Babs was the class act of the administration. I am reconsidering that evaluation however. Some of the silver spoon crowd can carry off a life a privilege. Some can't. Maybe she had better handlers back in the day.

I dont know guys.

Knowing that quotes like this are often taken out of context for political reasons.

I just saw a TV news story about schools from cities around the US taking in kids and, as a school, adopting entire families from New Orleans. Excellent story, and very interesting. I am paraphrasing, but not by much when someone said they had nothing but a crappy house and a government paycheck and now theyve got a rent-free home, a high-class school for their kids, and free job training. And will get a government paycheck. I suppose people can look at this negatively and point fingers or see the possibilities created for the future. Sounds like a good way to make a new start to me. The question is who will make good use of it, and who will milk it.

I'm no George Bush fan, but I think some are too eager to deal Laura Bush a worse line than she deserves.
