So we had made tentative plans with some friends teaching in Seoul to go visit this weekend, but we've now been informed that it's this weird Chusok thing, and it might not be that great an idea.

We'd be going by bus, and I've heard that since buses have their own expressway lanes, the delay isn't nearly as bad for them, but is it still a terrible idea to make this our first trip into Seoul? Should we just wait until next weekend, or will it be manageable?

Where are u going from? Subway lines wouldn't be too bad imho, but i've not been here during a national holiday. I understand the majority of the traffic is leaving Seoul at that time but i'd still wait for another weekend.

I would guess that most of the traffic would be coming into Seoul- so you might have a satisfying bus ride sticking two fingers up to the crowds fleeing the city

If you're coming from Cheong ju it should be okay. I did it a couple of years ago, and it was the shortest bus ride to Seoul ever.

I travelled from Pohang to Seoul one Chuseok and got there in record time. Getting home, however, took more than double the usual time, so just make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get back.

I also loved being in Seoul during this time because it was sooo quiet!

If you want to get right in the guts of Seoul, take the 500 bus to Jochiwon from the downtown or Kagyongdong area. You can get to Seoul station on the train in around 90 mins and standing tickets are usually available.
