Korean manga is a real find.
One of the first ones I came across in an English bookshop was about a Korean family living in America and it deals with adoption, hapas, step mothers, and a teenage girl having a crush on her half-brother.
Another one I read, in English, called "St Marie" is set in a Catholic school, and the kids are killing one another off in a deadly game of chess. There are transvestites (male to female and female to male), homosexuality - a young boy and a girl fighting over a guy, and characters where it's hard to tell whether they are boy or girl. There is a 'knight' character who bedhops from one girl's dorm to another; and a few other characters who use sex to gain strategic advantage in this game. Despite all these things, the manhwa retains an air of innocence and is very well-drawn. Each character has a description or bio at the back, detailed down to their blood type and what music they like. I have read up to volume 7 as that's all I can find. There are more but I'm not sure how many volumes there are in total. |
