If a girl wears grandmotherly clothing, or something that looks like the transformation of a Hanbok, claims to love spaghetti (from Sorrento), she probably goes to a woman's university and considers herself to be high class. In most cases, she is probably middle to upper middle class.

If you have a younger guy (or girl) who wears the same shirt every day, studies his ass off, has no hobby, has few friends, no girlfriend (more evident if he's in his late 30's), and can't seem to learn English or know what you are talking about, probably lower middle class to low class.

If you have an ajosshi who drives a Lex, wears a nice suit every day, plays golf and takes a lot of international business trips, openly jokes about cheating on his wife and drinking ��ź�� made from Ballantine's, and offers to take you to the room salon (or in my case, takes you to his favorite luxury room salon that features only top 5 school university chicks who he encourages you to ogle and grope and pays in cash with 2,000,000 won), he's probably rich.

So far you've been mostly discussing rich Koreans, but where are the toffs and gits? I haven't got a clue as to where Korea's upper class went, or where they can be found. You know, it's just possible that many of them fled during the various invasions, so they aren't as established (and therefore easily distinguishable) then other upper crusts.

It is very easy. SNU, yes, that is the elite class. Last year I spent chusok with a family who owned buildings in Pusan. They lived near the beach, son went to SNU, and not only did they have a huge house, they had a yard, a garden, cars galore! My friend (his oldest son) always told me "my father has very big hands" and when I found out that my apartment building was owned by HIM I started to understand the upper class. I was invited to private parties, I went to his son's wedding, those are the people that never take the subway, always travel, and hang out at golf and tennis clubs.


Second............those students home from expensive American schools. Boston University, Columbia, etc...... those are the kids who have it made, they usually drive the nice sports cars, speak flawless English, and throw money around at night clubs.

I thought it died with the royalty. I guess, though, that the yangban tradition still lives on with the jaebol families and other such old money - as old as money can get in Korea, anyway.
