"Korean food for Korean children"
In December, the Seoul Metropolitan Council unanimously passed an ordinance that school lunches in Seoul use only Korean food. Industry observers say the nation's total spending on school lunches is about 6 trillion won ($5.8 billion). The price differences between Korean food products and similar Chinese goods, for example, are so great that institutional food companies say it would be difficult or impossible to provide mass low-cost meals with Korean products alone.

Is a headline news?

In December, the Seoul Metropolitan Council unanimously passed an ordinance that school lunches in Seoul use only Korean food. Cases involving those ordinances are also pending at the Supreme Court.

What I meant was, to some of us with a longer perspective on life in Korea, the fact that one arm of the government (rather than one of Korea's foreign trading partners) is calling another government agency to task for erecting barriers to imports is newsworthy. What the Seoul Metropolitan Council voted to do (bar imported food) isn't the least bit remarkable.

The parents pay a fee each month for the kids lunches - it averages 60,000 ~ 80,000 won per month for their kids to eat lunch at the public schools - mostly the food each day is the same each week....

one day - rice, kimchi, bulgogi and vegies, soup
next day rice, kimchi, chicken and vegies, soup
etc etc etc

occassionally - once every 3 months - the kids will get a hot dog or slice of pizza.....

what exactly are they complaining about - the food is usually Korean and the parents pay for it......

Ask any of your 1st, 2nd, 3rd graders what your favorite food is - most of them answer..... hamburger.......

Yeah I mostly find kids answer with a Korean food like kimchi jjigae, although there's a sizable minority that answer spaghetti.
