The dogs here are always incredibly hostile to me. Back home, I was a friend of most dogs, even the occasional street dog. Until recently, I'd considered myself one of those people who has a kindred spirit with animals because, for the most part, no animals have tried to start any sh*t with me. Especially dogs.

But here, every time I try to pet a dog it either growls and barks at me, maybe trying to bite me, or runs away. Even the little green-eared poodles act like jerks to me.

So I thought maybe Korean dogs have this subconscious awareness of the dog meat industry, making them less friendly to people compared to dogs in the US. Well, that theory's out the door--I've observed plenty of Korean men get nice reactions from dogs on the street, dogs being walked.

As an example, my neighbor has a gated front yard with a white Jindo living outside. The stairs to my mansion go up next to their yard, where the dog can see me. He always snarls at me. Once he even ran up to the second-floor balcony and leaned up on the railing in an effort to get at me. I cooed him, and said "iri wa" like Koreans, but he was so vicious. Kinda rattled me. But then, I see random Korean dudes walk by and play with him through the gate. He jumps around, wags his tail.. but as soon as he sees whitey, he flips out.

Sometimes the racism here is just stupefying..

Could be something with smell, look, etc.

Same thing can happen back home with dogs raised in an exclusively white environment. My ex-gals little Poofster poodle would turn into Cujo whenever my friend Frankie (black) or Jin (Korean) would come over.

It's gotta be unfamiliarity. As a kid I had a dog that was wary of anyone over 6 feet tall, anyone with a beard, and most black people.

Yeah Qinella, I know what you're saying. I've had a dog or two since I was six. Boxers and English Bull Terriers, with one Aussie Terrier thrown into the mix, for 33 years. Same as you; a pretty good relationship with most of the dogs on the block. Come here, and I get snapped at and barked at, constantly. Can't figure it out.

Ya see son, when you eat dog, a dog knows. Dogs have a sense about people...but yeah, I feel ya about them Korean dogs, they're like their owners in a way... Very Happy

My wife used to load the dogs up in the car and take them with her when gassing up at the filling station. If a Mexican walked near the car, they would freak out and bark up a storm. I don't think it had anything to do with racism because neither one of us has/had anything against Mexicans...these things just happen.

I really don't think dogs are aware they are going to be eaten. They are acutely aware that they are not treated well. There is a tendency to put them in small cages giving them little walking space.

There's a dog near my home that loves the Koreans who walk by, but hates me.

He barks, "Kill Whitey!" and runs away.

Maybe he knows you are a cat person. Korean men hate cats, so the dog likes them.

Boy, it's raining cat and cats today. I would say, "cats and dogs" but the dogs've all been consumed. Several by me...

Hey Q, U.S. beef is back! Tie a good chunk around your ankle, and you'll have a new best friend....minus one foot maybe....
