Okay, so I've decided that I'll visit Thailand this winter. I just have a few questions: 1) Do you need to get a visa from the Thai embassy or do you just get the stamp when you arrive. I looked it up on the website and it appears that you just get a stamp when you arrive...just want to make sure.
2) I'm big into snorkeling. I plan to go to Phuket(avoiding Bangkok completely) and then head to Ko Phi Phi. The best spots for snorkeling? beaches/

3) Also want to pick up western-style products. What is the availability like in Thailand?

4) This may seem strange but since it looks like I'll be heading there alone...what do you do to protect your visa/money when you are on the beach or in the water? I've heard that room safes are a bit dodgy...hotel employees getting your credit card and charging a lot of things to it. Basically, the best place to keep your passport/cash...

5) Optimal amount of cash to bring in order to have a decent time. I'm not a drinker or smoker and don't intend to hang out in bars.

6) Accommodation. Is it best to make reservations or can you just walk in and get it. Talking about Phuket during the winter months.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You are issued a visa at the airport if your are american/ canadian, etc.

I always used the hotel safes in thailand (in the main office -- not the room) and never had any problems. if you're staying in a real shabby place, i would use caution. Carry a mixture of credit cards, travellers checks and cash and don't put it all in the same place.

i've heard ko phi phi is the best place to snorkel in thailand. not sure about specifics. if you go the gulf, the island of koh tao is the best.

bon voyage.

ps -- bangkok is worth a visit at least once.

Just fly in- on a one way if you wish. Get a stamp and get a taxi- in a matter of minutes.

I kept a good money belt under my shirt, with mutliple locks, which I always kept on me.. When in the water, I left it with a friend, or if swimming alone, simply relied on hiding it in my beach hut and locking it.

I did fine on about a million won a month. If you want midrange to good accom, and like to splash out/shop a lot you'll need up to double that.

Winter months is the best weather in Thai, it'll be busy. Book a head if possible- but there is always accomodation of some sort available on the spot- and even if you have to sleep in a dorm the first night (unusual), you can always secure something much better by looking the next morning. try get accom in the mornings when there are vacancies.

and...

One Night in Bangkok

THE AMERICAN:
Bangkok, Oriental setting
And the city don't know that the city is getting
The creme de la creme of the chess world in a
Show with everything but Yul Brynner

Time flies - doesn't seem a minute
Since the Tirolean spa had the chess boys in it
All change - don't you know that when you
Play at this level there's no ordinary venue

It's Iceland... or the Philippines... or Hastings... or... or this place!

COMPANY:
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
And if you're lucky then the god's a she
I can feel an angel sliding up to me

THE AMERICAN:
One town's very like another
When your head's down over your pieces, brother

COMPANY:
It's a drag, it's a bore, it's really such a pity
To be looking at the board, not looking at the city

THE AMERICAN:
Whaddya mean? Ya seen one crowded, polluted, stinking town...

COMPANY:
Tea, girls, warm, sweet, sweet
Some are set up in the Somerset Maugham suite

THE AMERICAN:
Get Thai'd! You're talking to a tourist
Whose every move's among the purest
I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine

COMPANY:
One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

THE AMERICAN:
Siam's gonna be the witness
To the ultimate test of cerebral fitness
This grips me more than would a
Muddy old river or reclining Buddha

And thank God I'm only watching the game, controlling it

I don't see you guys rating
The kind of mate I'm contemplating
I'd let you watch, I would invite you
But the queens we use would not excite you

So you better go back to your bars, your temples, your massage parlours

COMPANY:
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
A little flesh, a little history
I can feel an angel sliding up to me

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me
