Koreans Rank Fourth in Hard Liquor Consumption
Koreans are the world's fourth most ardent devotees of hard liquor, a report shows. Four out of 10 Korean people drink to excess, consuming more than one bottle of the local variety soju per session.... The ratio of female drinkers in the population more than doubled from 20.6 percent in 1986 to 49 percent in 2003. The increase in the number of tipplers drove up the social cost of drinking -- from traffic accidents caused by drunk driving to a drop in productivity and rehabilitation of alcoholics -- to an estimated W4.9 trillion (US$4.9 billion) in 2003.

How many times have I seen booze in my workplace fridge --- let me count the days... Still ahhh they have no crack heads and tweakers like in the states or the more docile hippie dope heads, so I still believe it safer and as yet...

Not surprising at all.

Whisky is the main spirit consumed here, and guess where that is consumed.

Again though, I'm not surprised either- these fellas can drink, especially the hard stuff.

Sorry about that,
I just did not consider Soju as a spirit as my idea of spirits contain about 38% alcohol content or more.

Certainly, Soju is consumed more than whisky here.

Defintely not a suprise.

I have a small series of apartment buildings under construction in my neighborhood.. when they take breaks.. they actually pound down soju.. the bottles are littered around. Go to any park where there are old people.. more soju bottles.. go out any night of the week.. soju bottles on nearly every eating table.

Its shocking its only in 4th place.

Its also shocking they can stomach such a gross drink. I'd much rather do tequila slammers or similar tbh.

I read a similar study here about 2 years ago. It ranked Korea #2 in per capita alcohol consumption (after Slovenia), and #1 by far in consumption of spirits.

It looks like Korean alcohol consumption compared to the rest of the world has actually gone down a bit.
