I unexpectedly ended up with a bag of shredded coconut for potting soil. The sage, marjoram and oregano seem to be happy about it. So far, the thyme, basil and chives haven't responded. Is there something I can do about this? Is the coconut stuff just not good for those? (I've already added fertilizer.)

There is also some fuzzy stuff growing on the top of a few pots. I am guessing it's from too much water. Is it caused by something else?

(The snow peas are the happiest of all. They are growing like gangbusters.)

Okay, I'll bite.

I don't know anything about using just shredded coconut for potting soil- I would imagine that it would soak up and hold water, and yes, that white fuzzy stuff is probably mildew caused by exactly that- poor drainage and too much water retention.

My basil, chives, oregano, lemongrass, sage, cilantro, thyme, mint, lemongrass and lavender all seem to love the Japanese potting soil I got at Home Plus, mixed 50/50 with the regular potting soil I bought at Costco. I also have been using some potting soil put together by a local pot and plant street vendor.

Plants really detest having their roots overly wet, especially as the weather cools. It is best to let them dry out a lot between waterings.

once again, i don't understand why herbs Wink in general aren't grown in a more widespread capacity.

1. cops are generally indifferent and wouldn't know it if they saw it.
2. the climate is perfect.

but hey, i'm sure it's great for oregano here too. i have my doubts as to whether many korean cops would know what that was either.

No, JongnoGuru, Derrek's not on holiday. He was banned for some pissant reason or other, at the behest of a flaky mod.

There was a time when the modding on this site was mostly free from blatant discrimination and pettiness, but that time has passed, re: Derrek's ban and Waterbaby's recent short-lived ban.

And that's why so many of us that belong to the "expat in korea" community have gone elsewhere to freely share information and participate in a freer online community.

Sorry to disappoint so many good folks.

I may have jumped the gun on worries. The basil popped thru this morning, which is a big relief. Need that stuff for tomato soup and all the pasta sauces.

Time will tell on the thyme and chives. Maybe replant over Chusok under a grow light.
