Korea Ranks 105th in Global Labor Flexibility
South Korea's labor flexibility stood at the bottom of the world's ranking as local companies face difficulties in hiring and firing workers due largely to the country's strong labor unions. It ranked 105th among 155 countries in conditions for the hiring and firing of workers, reflecting its rigid labor market, according to a report released Wednesday by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The IFC is the private sector arm of the World Bank Group. The country also came in 44th in tax compliance and 87th in investor protection.
According to the report, New Zealand had the best conditions for private business in the world, followed by Singapore, the United States and Canada. Countries ranked high on the list had simple regulations and rules that helped create a business-friendly climate, the report added.

...105th among 155 countries in conditions for the hiring and firing of workers...
And consider the business environment
The country placed 27th in the overall ease of doing business, lagging far behind Asian competitors Singapore and Hong Kong. Hong Kong placed 5th and Thailand and Malaysia were also found to have a better business environment than Korea, ranking 20th and 21st, respectively.

I dunno... hubcap maybe? They do make lots of cars.
On the bright side, a spokesman for the Korean Labor Federation has declared that the rankings should be inverted, whereby Korea would actually stand 51st on the scale, given that union membership is overwhelmingly male and common understanding has it that "rigidity is good" in men. His claim has been echoed by various spokespersons in the eel-eatery and dog-diner sectors of the restaurant industry. |

Ironic that thailand and malaysia outranked korea when koreans seem to look down on southeast asian asian countries as being 'poor' and somehow beneath them. |

Must be a bit disappointing for you that these labor flexibility figures aren't actually meaningful, since, well much of Korea's large scale manufacturing is now done outside Korea in the above mentioned countries and beyond, and Korea is ranked among the top 20 economies in the world, top 15 in some stats. Which is pretty amazing considering the small population.
