|
|
My second year middle school students are pain the arse, but that is their job. With one particularly nasty class that I have before lunch I have quite a complex discpline system in place.
Basically minor behavior problems get an yellow card. When the class reaches 5 then it's hands up for 5 in silence. I then add a minute to their class time at the end of the lesson. However during the lesson they get a chance to work off their punishment by volunteering to speak. No kid is allowed to go more than once, so not only does this system get a good smattering of kids to speak, it helps keep control of the class as the ones who don't want to learn english are often the ones that disrupt class the most. |

Interesting that my most difficult class is also a second-year middle school class that's right before lunch (in relative terms - maybe I'm just being picky compared to how perfect most of my classes are). I might have to keep this idea in mind. I think with mine even keeping them one minute would be a severe penelty. In contrast my third-year middle school classes groan when the bell rings and want me to stay. |

My worst class is the last for the evening so I have all the time in the world to keep them late!!
They are last year elementary though. Thanks to the ideas of other posters on this board their behaviour has become much better and they show a lot more respect.
Keeping them late works a charm! Unfortnately I only have 5 mins between my classes so I cant afford to keep any others late.... |

Nothing I hate more than finishing the night or worse the week with your worst class. It can sap your will do anything.
I've also found almost no discipline regime works for long. It seems to work for a week or a month and then the kids become like the Borg and adapt. It has no more deterrent effect. |

My students adore me so discipline is rarely a problem. But when it is, I simply shout shut the HELL up! Works a treat. "To yong hi he" simply increases the volume through laughter/surprise. If in doubt, shout...that's my philosophy. |

I'm not allowed to keep my kids late, which sort of pisses me off. They all have to catch a bus RIGHT after class, or the world will implode.
I do like the public humiliation thing, tho. One of my middle school girls has the most obnoxius laugh ever (kind of like a 400 pound hyena would sound, I guess) and she goes out of her way to break it out anytime possible. The other day I said "Do you know you sound like a big fat American man when you laugh? I mean REALLY FAT..are you a big fat American man?
She hasn't laughed in a week.

That's hilarious. What do you say to the ones who randomly scream like banshees? |

I refer incorrigible troublemakers to the hagwon owner's wife who I've dubbed the "Dragon Lady". She'll scream and threaten for thirty minutes non-stop until the child is shaking and humbly apologetic.
Apparently the owner's wife learned well interrogation (and humiliation) techniques in her former career with the KCIA. |

Yeah, calling an awkward and impressionable middle-school girl fat, (and let's face it, that's exactly what she's going to think). Hilarious. You really showed her how much of a man you are. |

Hey Bosin,
Just so you know, I didn't call her fat..I said she SOUNDED fat.
She happens to be rail thin, and actually complains about how skinny she is. I am not making fun of her over her body, but over something she can CONTROL on a day to day basis. And it worked. |
