I have two Korean kids in my grade 6 class here in Laos. Last Friday we were talking about the time I visited Pusan for the cherry blossom festival while I was teaching in Korea.

They said, "Teacher, did you know that the Japanese came to Korea and stole our cherry blossom trees?"

"No, I didn't know that."

"It's true teacher, they steal everything Korean!"

Several Koreans in different circumstances (adult class, while travelling, a shopkeeper) have told me that Japan BROUGHT cherry blossom trees TO Korea during the Japanese occupation.

That was what I heard, that the cherry blossoms came from Japan. Sort of like the red weed in War of the Worlds.

The Japanese did steal several national treasures, including the best bonsai trees from the best Korean gardens. It sounds like the kids are just a little mixed up.

According to wiki, the cherry blossom is indigenous to Korea.

The Japanese that are in Japan, are not the indigenous "Japanese" people.

Thats what I heard. Back in the Bronze age there are Japanese people, and the modern Japanese came in and flushed them out.

Right, the Japanese stole themselves from Korea. Smile

On a more serious note, I have also heard that theory. I think the idea is that before the ancient Korean Japanese came to Japan, the islands were mostly populated by the Ainu in the north and possibly Austronesians in the southern parts.

The indigenous people of japan still live up in the far north. The people we know of as japanese came from -- mongolia? no idea.

I read at a temple in jeju that the cherry blossoms are native to korea but not to japan.

Anyways, japan stol a lot of ceramic technology from korea. Also, a lot of Buddhist culture went to Japan uring the baekje period.

Japan stole Korea's common sense.

How about things Korea has stolen from Japan?

I'm not so sure about the traditional stuff, but there's plenty contemporary wise.

comic books, animation, video games, Rod Stewart haircuts for the young guys, food (ever notice how every kimbap chungook sells omurice and tonkatsu?), annoying pop music
