http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_rap_cap

Just looking at the nationmaster stats tonight.. and thought its odd that South Korea is the ONLY Asian country on the top 25 for rape stats.

(Just an aside.. not bashing Korea.. its actually MUCH lower than most countries-of-origin than most English teachers. Just find it interesting that I don't see Japan or anywhere else in Asia except for Korea on the list.

Presumably, though, the stats only reflect reported rapes. I daresay a lot rapes are not reported in certain countries. This is one problem in Korea and, I would suspect, places like Pakistan, for example.

It may have something to do with the fact that not all rape crime statistics are created equal. For instance, I suspect that a rape in Canada has a higher chance of being reported than a rape in Korea.

Precisely.

This applies to many national statistics being compined in international charts. It is quite hard to get reliable stats that are actually compatible for comparison because of the simple fact that countries use very different methods and standards to gather stats.

Unemployement for example is a good case in point. In some countries the definition of unemployed is made narrower in order to shrink the unemployement rate. If these stats are taken and then tossed in a chart comparing unemployement rates of various countries who use wider definitions for unemployement, you get a skewed chart that does not reflect much.

from the site:

" Definition: Total recorded rapes. Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence. Per capita figures expressed per 1000 population."

i'm sure that in korea, they don't report all the rapes they have. i know people who have gone to the police after being raped in korea, to be told that they weren't raped and to go home. aside from that, many korean women would probably be too ashamed to report a rape in the first place.

i know that the stat in canada is that less than 10% of all sexual assualt gets reported to the police. when i was in high school i knew 13 girls who had been raped (my high school only had 300 people), and none had reported it.

Sexual Assault Case Provokes Uproar
Police Under Attack for Mistreating Victimized Middle School Girls
When the victims were questioned at the police station, family members of the assaulters besieged the victims, threatening them with additional attacks. In the course of investigation, the girls were also able to hear abuse from one of the attackers. Police also made the victims point out their assailants in front of them, leading the girls to worry about the possibility of revenge. One police officer was also found to have insulted the victims, saying: "My hometown is Miryang, and you girls have brought disgrace on the city."

Province Dismisses Principals over Gang Rape Scandal
"The victim ran away from home for a month after being subjected to the gang rape and transferred to another school after coming back home," the Education Office said. "We have taken disciplinary measures against the principals and teachers in charge of the schools for not dealing with the matter appropriately despite being aware of the incidents."

Studies have shown that 100% of sheep in NZ are incapable of giving consent due to the fact they are legally impared by fumes given off by gum boots. Shocked
