I need some input. Today I got my electric bill, and the cost is 118,000 won. My bill for last month was only 40,000 won, so I need to locate the variable. In this past month, I got a computer, which I usually keep on 24 hours a day (because of bittorrents). However, I've also started using my a/c more. During the time from of my 40k won bill, I used the a/c about 10 hours a day; this past month I've used it about 15 hours a day.

So, I guess the real question is, does a computer use a ton of energy? Anyone else with a computer and similar a/c usage able to help me out with some comparisons?

Thanks,
Q~

My computer runs 24/7 and I've been using the A/C about 8-10 hours daily for the last couple of months. My highest electric bill ever was last month ... 32,000. Winter average is about 10,000-12,000 and the only variable is the A/C. How big is your place? Have you cleaned all the gunk out of the aircon filter?

I don't know how big it is. Three rooms. I haven't cleaned the air filter, but do you think that will make a differnce? I'll definitely try it. In the meantime, I'll curse my misfortune of not being able to speak Korean and working with obsequious Korean women who have no idea where electric charges come from nor how to determine it. Aish.

118,000 won. Unreal.

Not sure if this is true, but I'm told that the government allows you so much electricity at a certain rate per month then when you surpass that amount they charge you more exponentially. True or is the apartment managers sticking it to the foreigner?

Are you living in an officetel?
Maybe you're paying an equal share of the total of your building's electricity bill. I've heard that can happen...

Electricity rates in Korea are set at about 80 Won per kilowatt hour (with some localized price swings). Air conditioners use a rather insane amount of power.

An air unit meant to cool a thousand square feet would cost you between 150 and 200 Won an hour to run, though confirming the power used can be done by looking at the details listed on the unit you have.

What you say is true.

at the back of your electricity bill is the rate per unit. Over a certain unit, you get charged more per unit.

118,000 for 15 hours of air con a day sounds reasonable to me.

It's times like this I'm happy to live in my little shoebox. My place is about 3 pyeong. (Yes that's right, only 3). Small but easy to heat and cool. Summer electricity bill never more than 10,000w even with a/c on all night. Of course, I don't have a tv, don't use my computer much at home, don't have a washing machine or dryer and don't cook. Maybe that's the key Wink

I been running my computer 24/7 for the last 2 years I can safely say it shouldn't add more than around 15,000 to the bill.

It's probably the air-con.

Well, thankfully, it is becoming cooler now, and I don't use my a/c as much. I just can't believe an a/c unit would be so expensive. In the US I ran mine 24/7, and it was central and effective, and still my bill was never more than $60 a month.

Back to the dual-fan stystem for me.
