I'm not sure what kind of luck I'm going to have posting here, but...

I've got a nice rooftop and want to build a covered patio on top under which I can keep some outdoor furniture, a barbeque, etc.

Has anyone done this before, in Korea or abroad? Is canvas the best choice for a permanent installation? I've been googling for some good designs, but haven't found much. It's either build-it-myself or buy an open tent kind of thing, but I'm not sure if a tent would hold up to the weather.

Also, any leads on Home Depot-like places in Korea to get supplies at?

I'm not sure where you could find it, but how about plexiglass?

It could cost more than you want to spend and I know you would have to cover it or get the tinted kind for shade, but it would hold up well.

Other than that, you could try the tents like they use at the markets.

I haven't done this myself, just trying to brainstorm a bit. Good luck with whatever you try.

Not sure if you care or not, but building a structure on your roof MAY be illegal.

Several years ago, I worked at a hagwon. We set up a playground on the roof (VERY high walls, NO chance of kids going over), but it was useless in the rain, and even in the summer, it was too hot. I asked the director to build a 'roof' over the playground, but he said it was illegal. He'd gone to whichever gov't office, and they told him there was no way he could do it. Also, he CLAIMED they do 'spot checks' from helicopters to check. I have no idea if this is illegal or not, nor if they actually do 'spot checks'. This was just what I was told.

Personally, I think you're idea is a good one. Just wanted to share my experience.

A couple ideas. Offers you coverage, yet it doesn't involve construction. This is the route I would take.

That's exactly the kind of tent I've been looking at, T-J -- the kind they use outdoors for food vendors.

Seems a bit small, and not sure how it would hold up to the weather, but it's definitely a good idea.

Ideally, I'd just like to fix a canvas awning/canopy from the top of the brick stairwell structure on my roof. I'm not worried about legality, as it's only a small part of my roof, and many of my neighbors have done similar things. But still, I think I'll check out some more tents too.

Sounds like what you really want is a roll-out awning-- the type that many restaurants have over the storefront. Probably a bit pricey, since there is likely only one manufacturer in Korea, but it would do what you want and you could roll it up out of harms way on stormy days if you felt the need.

Glad to help. A couple friends in the States use them in the back yard. The one is 10'x20', how big are you looking for?

By the way, I'm waiting for you to collect on that beer I owe you. Not sure what your schedule and location is. PM me when you're ready to collect.
