In aerial photography and remote sensing, I believe those are what are called "image artifacts". Artifacts are flaws or faults in the image, caused by the measuring system itself. Like a hair in front of the lens, or a hair on the photo paper when the image is developed. In this case, because google maps is based on satellite imaging, it's probably some similar flaw.

You can notice that the size of the "thing" always seems to remain the same in porportion to the size of the photograph, regardless of the size of the houses, buildings, etc. behind it.
