When I went to get an F-3 for my wife bout 6 months ago, I inquired about getting a Multiple Entry visa because i knew i would be going back home at this time of the year.

The guy behind the desk told me (a paraphrase) of the following:
(this i was just before my visa run mind you):
I: Can I get a multiple entry visa
He: It isn't necesarry.
I: Really?
He: Yes. Because you have a visa, you need a multiple entry permit.
I: How long does this process take?
He: 20 minutes to two hours but it is same day.

Now, his English was very poor and i don't have enough Korean skills but, since I am leaving in about 3 weeks, I NEED to get this NAILED down for a fact.

There USED to be a multiple entry visa (E2 type) that you would need to come and go and come again. IF I UNDERSTOOD this guy right, they have changed this format. Now the E2 visa is one thing, and a "multiple entry permit" (or something else) is a TOTALLY different set of paperwork letting me come and go and has no real effect on my E2

Does anyone have some good information to this regard? I don't know if i'm alone here but this REALLY surprised me a few months ago...and i'm an idiot for waiting until a month before departure day to figure it out. I'm going down to immgration on Wednesday so if anyone knows about this and/or could tell me what paper work to take to the office..it'd be super!

No, the guy was right, as far as I know. The visa and permit are separate, but most people get both processed at the same time. Its been that way for at least 3 years now. Might have happened when they changed the visa from a stamp to a sticker though.

You fill out the form, hand the money and your passport over, and they give it back to you with a new stamp in there.

If you're really pressed, you can get a single re entry permit at Incheon airport on the day you leave

So do Americans.

The little "M" on my E-2 under "Entries" is for "Multiple," but you just try to convince the ladies at the Asiana check-in desk of that. I flew to Japan last weekend. Getting the multiple-entry concept through her head took 20 minutes, her supervisor, and a personal visit from an irritated immigration officer "just to make sure."

One thing to be careful of with those free multi entry ones- Americans have to pay for a new multi entry permit if they renew their visa. Brits might too, but I've only ever heard Americans talk about it.
