I like playing with computers. I've learnt alot and made mistakes. MY BIGGEST MISTAKE was;
The cd burner/dvd reader combo drive in my laptop was playing up. It would not even read disks that it burned it's self. However it would read disks burnt with my external burner. So I should have left it alone.
BUT
I re-flashed the firmware. Thinking maybe it would help (DUH).
I got the firmware for my correct model but the WRONG firmware edition.
NOTE: ALLWAYS check the firmware number....not just the model number.
SO, now the drive is nuked of course...not visable under cmos and hence unflashable back to orig.
I know there are ways of doing a hot swap in boot time that should work. But my drive is not hot swappable....its in a Compaq laptop and I dont really wanna go ripping the machine's guts out. The drive was slow and un reliable anyway.
Is it possible for me to get a pc place to put in a dvd burner (prefeably dual layer)?
I know they come out on the newer machines but has anyone done an upgrade?
BTW: the machine its self is maybe 4 years old abd still runs really well. I of course need to be able to boot from cd for recovery etc, so I need a working built in drive and a dual layer would be sweet.
I'd apreciate any info. |
