So today I get told that the company is thinking of sending a few of us on a business trip to Phnom Penh. Then I see, on my favorite site, this! Is the universe trying to tell me something?  |

Phnom penh rocks....but i do feel sorry for the people there in real poverty:)
If you go there try and help them out a bit, there are some good charities. Its a nation still recovering from unimaginable trauma. And still abused to an extent by some of the worst and scummiest westerners out there. |

In all fairness, travelers to Phnom Penh KNOW that it's a thrid world country. Travelers KNOW what to expect. It's no surprise. So, a disneyland when compared to korea?
Travelers to korea think that "well, gee, koreans/korea are an advanced nation so it will be like life in most of the rest of the world" until they spend a few days in korea and then they become disappointed. The country and its people do not live up to the hype it markets. |

I was in Phnom Phen in September. It's alright if you like a 'damaged goods' sort of ambiance. It can be a pretty rough town, but most of it is between locals. I did meet a gentleman who was in the 'Heart of Darkness' pub when some Khmer yahoo with a rich daddy pulled a gun. I suggest avoiding that place.

I know. Why would anyone EVER want to come here as a tourist? Wall to wall skyscrapers and bumper to bumper traffic. That's all Korea is to me. Oh, yes, broken up with some moutains. 
Seriously, if their goal had not been to cram a kajillion people in an area the size of Florida, Korea might have been one of the most beautiful places around. But they destryed it with over population. I just wonder what % of the world's pollution is from Korea? If we go by land size versus how much is produced, I bet Korea makes much more than Florida, so when you do it that way (fair way in my opinion) Korea makes more pollution than the USA. |

Well, I won't waste my time answering to anyone who can't even tell(or name) "ShilMiDo"(the film) from "Tae Guk Ki..."(another film) but still has the courage to posts things about Korea, claiming being an expert.  |

First: What Korea is to me, is what it is to me. How can you argue with that? What it is to you, it isd to you. ECT...
Second: I have been here for 5 years and yes, most students do not think Korea is over populated and think the population needs to be higher. I have heard this many many mnay times from studs 18-60's, as well as Korean friends and professors etc.
And yes, I think the opposite. For example, the town I lived in before I camer to Kwangju, every korean I knew there, or have konwn since I came to Kwangju referes to that place as a small town.
Well I agree, small town in land area. About the same size as the place I came from in Ohio. However, my town in Ohio had a pop of 300, but the town in Korea (same land area) had a population of 200,000. And it was wall to wall skyscrapers and 24/7 traffic jams.
Third: As for the pollution part of my post, I said "I wonder" "I bet" "if".
I never gave any facts. All I know is Koreans say so often that the west makes so much more pollution. But it looks like they are comapring countries, not how big the country is. IF the USA had the same population density as Korea, just imagine how much more pollution there would be (from traffic alone) as compared to now.
Forth: I know I am not very smart. I am sure that I have mentioned that mant times on this forum. I am dyslexic, have ADD, and a low IQ. When I was about 11, I almost had to go to the school that uses the "short buses." Almost, but not quite.  If so, I would have never (probably) been able to go to college etc. And then what kind of a life would I have. I would never have been an ESL teacher in Korea.
Oh God. Why?????? Why did you let me "just" miss being put into special education. I often wonder what my life would be like now. I would probably be living in a group home and be an (arbite ) at BK. And in the evenings I would be able to watch Cow and Chicken. Oh, God I wish I could get Cartoon Netwoork.
Oh, what was the topic again? Oh, yes. I remeber. It is Turkies that drown in the rain, not chickens. And only domestic ones, not wild. That is why Turkies are kept in those aluminum barns and not let to run free.

I have never heard a Korean or otherwise say this country is underpopulated. You and Forrest need to check with your students again. I live in Pusan. I ask my Korean friends, "hey, let's go to Nampodong on Sunday." Every one of them replies back, "er...no, it's too crowded." Ame with Haeundae Beach in the summer (nobody from Pusan goes there if they can help it) or Lotte Dept store (unless you're an ajumma in which case you're the reason why my grlfriend won't go there) on the weekend.

First, you are arguing with a chicken who is almost retarded.
Second, well the uni. i taught in for my second 2 years (just before I came here) was in PUSAN. All my friends were Koreans from Pusan. Or from Koje Do (my first 2 years in Korea were there) and all my Korean friends would say the same things as yours about how terrible the crowds are etc.. They would say that in one breath, but in the next, if you asked them if Korea was overpopulated, then they would say, "No, Korea's best resourse is people, we need more people, the populatoin needs to grow."
Being from a farm area in Ohio, I have asked this question as a class question to every college/university class, or adult special programs at my college/university, and always (FOR FIVE YEARS) get the same answer. As for kid's classes. They don't know, and they don't care.
The last adult calss I had (break program at my current University) I had 7 students. Aged 29-late 50. Occupations: 1. Graduate student Law. 2. High school French Teacher, 3. Elemetary teacher (3ed grade) 4. Dentist, 5. Cardiologist, 6. High School English Teacher, and 7. A Suprime Court Judge It was a very advanced free talking class. There weeks ago, I chose the topic: "Is Korea overpopulated?"
I, as usual, stay neutral and just keep things going. My free speaking classes are like TV talk shows. Either I or a student pick a topic. Then I am the talk show host. I guide, make sure everyone participates, etc. Well of the 7, only the Elementary Teacher thought Korea was overpopulated. Man, did the other 6 lay into her".

And Haeundae beach can be quite nice in the Summer, especially at night.
We often used to go to TGIF or Bennigins, or Outback, or The indian restaurant, etc. at the place on the beach across from Pusan Aquarium. After dinner, we would go for a walk on the sand. Then maybe norebang.
Man I miss that.
