In my times here, I have not heard of one woman who was busted or deported for illegal teaching. Yet I have known of several who worked two hagwons, or part time at a second job. Also many privates.
t's probably just a coincidence, but I haven't heard of any women getting busted on here, either.
How about you people? |

| Probably because there are fewer women illegals. Men have a money and sex motivation for coming to Korea illegally. Men are risk takers. So it's a numbers game. And then maybe because of the methodology used by Immigration to suss out illegals. They find a whitey that fits the type and follow him. Since all white women are russian prostitutes, they would leave women alone. |

MMT, WTF is that supposed to mean? Women DON'T have a money or sex motivation? Why not? Money and sex seem to be the only things that get me off my arse!
Oh, and I've met both men and women who do privates, and I've only met/heard of men who've been caught. I haven't been here that long though. I suspect that if it is true that men tend to be the only ones caught, it's because it makes immigration officials look and feel a whole lot beter to bust some whitey trying to steal their women than some girl in tears. |

I have no statistical evidence to hand that would back up this assertion, but I'll confidently make the claim regardless. Still, it's much less a factor than the vaster numbers of male English teachers in Korea than female English teachers. I'm certain there are statistics that will support this. Perhaps, but taking a job in a foreign country you know little or nothing about, where they speak a language you don't understand at all, is a pretty big risk in and of itself that every female in Korea on this board has taken. Is it true that there are more male teachers here than female? Anyone out there know? I have noticed this being the case, I think, but does anyone have numbers to substantiate this claim? |

From what I've read of posters' experiences, I'd say that even with the internet, even with Dave's, even with word-of-mouth over the years, etc,, coming to Korea to teach English is still a bigger gamble -- specifically the risk of nasty surprises -- than most people applying to work here fully appreciate. There are many, many seasoned pros here, and they're sitting pretty today. But I think a poll would show that for most people, their first or second jobs/years in Korea are real eye-openers in the very worst way. Hmm. Maybe it isn't most. Maybe it's 49 out of 100.

Give me a break. 
Almost every female teacher I've met between 20 and 30 are here either to a) pay off their student loans, or b) their credit card debts, and I've run across just as many female illegals as male illegals. There are plenty of reports in the news of Immigration bagging large numbers of illegals, but they rarely, if ever, go out of the way to mention the gender. And I've seen a few news stories where they "sting" the illegal, and in most cases the illegal looking for a job is female. |

Women surely have a need for money. And I would say that's what brings 90% of women here. However men have a two fold motivation: the money and sex. While it's certainly true many women leave Korea with a nice Korean husband, I can't say I met many that came here with the express purpose to be on top of a Korean guy. However, I don't know many male teachers who did not come, partially, because of the lure of Korean women and the idea that one can find something substantially better here than what you can find at home.
Men in their 20s, which is pretty much the ESL teacher demographic, are big risk takers. By far. That's pretty much a given. Ask anyone who sells car insurance.
It seems pretty obvious that male ESL teachers outnumber women in Korea. That's changing, mind you, as student loans get bigger and the job market for recent grads gets suckier back at home. |
