For those of you unfamiliar with the American expression "dumpster diving," it means "reclaiming" the things other people throw out.
Korea has too be one of the great countries in the world for this particular endeavor (apart from Japan). The things Koreans throw out never ceases to amaze me.
Almost all the furnishings in my apartu I found on the side of the street. Got me a nice big leather easy chair, an oak desk, a cool antique coffee table, and a tv that I pulled out of the trash.
What kinds of things have you all found? Stories and experiences please.
One man's trash is another man's treasure. |

This appartment- nothing, but in the past, I've had a bookcase, wardrobe a couple of lamps, and a big old easy chair.
I think if you live near the big apartment complexes you've got better prospects |

Almost completely stocked mine from "dumpster diving." Table and chairs, computer desk, TV and stand, wardrobe, cool dresser, mirors, gas range, and a cool rug. A friend of mine got a fridge there as well. You can get such great things in there. I wish I had a truck so I could have gotten some of the things that were to big to fit in my car! |

I found ten pounds of raw tuna sitting on my doorstop yesterday morning. It looked like it had been outside for a while, but I brushed off the flies and brought it inside. It's in the fridge now. It could only have been out there for, tops, 12 hours. Should I eat it? |

Miami was a great place for dumpster diving. Once every few months the city allows people to put out large items to be collected. I used to cruise Miami Beach with my friends and my pickup truck, and we found incredible stuff.
The richer the neighborhood the better- selling or recycling is just unheard of.
Here I have such a tiny place, there is no point in even looking. |

Definitely not! Head down to your local park, find an out of the way spot behind some bushes, bury the shoit down about 3 feet, cover up, and wait for a month. Dig up, brush fly larvae into container. Set up stand on street. Sell tuna and larvae to passers by for exorbitant amounts of money. |

You guys and gals came 10,000 miles to teach English and then go dumpster diving as a hobby cuz you can't stand the fellow dumpster divers from your home country?! Now that's funny |

I guess its not the right time of the month for dumpster diving maybe, but I went out today specifically to dive some dumpsters in my neighbourhood and I didn't find anything! Not even the smallest thing that anyone in the world would think of keeping. I couldn't even find any garbage to pick up and put in the garbage can! I headed a few blocks towards the 6 or so large scale apartment buildings in my area (you know, the ones with the big numbers on the side of 'em). I also didn't really find a suitable area where one would dump things.. I need a dresser damnit! Anyone got any tips? |

JacktheCat, I can't believe you got a tv. I'd just assume they don't work, dumpster tvs. Good one.
Freebeerandchicken, are you joking? You need wheels to be able to cover more ground, like a bicycle. First find a dumpster bicycle, then scout a wider area (wearing dumpster clothes and munching on dumpster vegetables; nice weekend!). |

I've acquired a coffee table, a desk chair, a swivelly cane chair for the balcony (couldn't move and/or fit the matching 4-seater ), bedside drawers, a mirror and two sofas - the first one I threw out because I saw something I liked more on the street! On that day I wandered around the complex and there were 3-4 sofas to choose from, ha ha.
I don't need anything else for my apartment but when I hear the moving trucks and those crane things heaving things up and down in the complex, I sometimes go wandering to see what I can find, heh heh.
A Korean teacher told me that her sister and her sister's friend go out 'hunting' together. They go equipped with a stool to sit on, scissors and other useful tools. They even go through the cardboard skips to find pizza boxes so they can pop out the tokens (and have agreed on taking different stores' tokens ). The teacher says her sister 'gifts' the tokens to their younger student sister, nice. |
