Somebody posted about being overlooked for a Chuseok gift from the hagwon, which had provided all its Korean staff with gifts. I myself got a nice bakery product (sort of half-cake half-bread) just like my Korean coworker. It's a small hagwon.

And I work at a good hagwon.

I am the bubbly, happy, supportive co-worker. I believe in giving gifts on or near holidays. I also try to give gifts to co-workers on their important days if I know (or remember). It is important that each person in the work environment be positive and supportive for all.

I brought my school a gift one of those 15k Maxim coffee sets. I brought it in and put it on the staff room table, and wandered off. I told my boss that I got them all a little present as they have been pretty good to me, and I wanted to say thank you. Later just as I left I was given a Dove soap set along with everyone else who worked at the place. Soap sets that did not see to occupy the premises until the boss lady sent someone out to buy 7 of them. My guess is she went out and did that not to be out done, but on the other hand I am not complaining as it's Dove soap, and I like the smell.

One way to ensure a gift would have been to give one myself, but frankly I didn't realize Chuseok was a gift-giving holiday. Once in Taiwan I gave a Christmas card to my school's owner. He was stunned, maybe didn't know it was Christmas, and he promptly picked up and gave me a brand new "wimbledon" windbreaker he'd just bought for himself, unwrapped, apparently to save face. It's a nice jacket.

None of the 100+ teachers, Korean or otherwise, got a gift from the boss. Our boss is just a cheap bastard.

I did get a Dove gift pack from a student though, which I thought was particularly nice considering that he's only been my student for about two weeks.

All 60+ teachers at my school got Maxim instant coffee gift sets from the parents association. I'm not big on that coffee, so re-gifting that s.o.b. is my plan.
