Interesting.
At 8:50PM on Thursday, 8 out of 10 of the top threads have to do with the US. Except for Avian Flu and Psychopaths all of the first 10 threads were directly related to the Great Satan. You would think that with the majority of ESLers here in Korea being from somewhere else, there would be something else (or is that somewhere else?) to talk about. Interesting. |

try to get an american to have a well informed debate about new zealand...
or a canadian and Irishman debating the success of the Aboriginals in Australia.
sorry dude....it's the one country that gets all the media attention..and the only country that (by it's own accord) does the only things of any concequence |

This forum is populated by a LOT of people who are not Americans - and it would appear that they have a lot more to say about the US than they do about their own homes. And no one is holding a gun and forcing them. It's what they want to talk about.
Same token, you want to discuss local policies or international events related to NZ, Aus, Eire, The Great White North ... you might end up educating a lot of us who could use it. Why not give it a try? |

That's partly because no information was given. Usually an article or something is helpful to offer when people probably won't be immediately aware of what's going on. |

Fair enough. It was all over the European and International News sources though. Why weren't people aware of it?
Is the problem that if a news story doesn't make the domestic US (and by extension, English-language Korean) press, not enough people here will have heard of it?
I mean, it wasn't exactly a small story - the Government in charge of the world's third largest economy in crisis with no short-term prospect of stable government, potentially causing the world's largest continental economy to suffer... |

One crucial element may be this: there don't appear to be too many people with axes to grind with respect to the German govt, political parties, or individual German politicians on this board.
Bolivia is going through a particularly trying time now, domestically and in its foreign relations.
Chile will go through a presidential election cycle starting the in next few months, ending next year. Lagos, a Socialist (in name only), sits in La Moneda, part of the concertacion coalition. But this coalition has issues and the rightist candidate, Lavin, is poised to make a run. It will be interesting, but I doubt it will appear on this board.
This is mostly a place to criticize the U.S. and attack Bush.

Having used a broader sample (say the entire first page ) would have been more accurate & persuasive. Too many counter-examples obviously exist.

I was going to critique this statement as being a little offside.
I then realised, how many articles can I write about issues that interest me that would be responded too, or not flamed and dumped so maybe Gopher you are half there. |

Am I to believe that the internet does not carry large amounts of news from most English speaking countries? I think not.
The Bobster and Gopher are far more right on this than a lot of people here care to admit. |
