No I'm not talking about Kim Jong-Il and Noh Mohyun locked in an amphitheatre, clashing naked in 3 foot deep jelly.

I realised the other day that most of my really good Korean friends are probably such good friends because they don't seem Korean in the slightest. My best hyongs seem either Chinese or like that mysterious identity- and prejudice-less cosmopolitan creature I strive to be. My girlfriend is a quarter Japanese but that must be the dominant gene.

After pondering this scary (xenophobic) thought for a couple of days, two of the aforementioned Koreans disclosed that they pretty much hate Korean people and will never, ever do business with them. Chinese yes. Japanese yes, and she's female. Then they laughed at some silly cultural hang-ups that Koreans have, it was an eye-opening and fascinating evening.

I don't hate Koreans because of my amazing friends that I have made here. Besides, I hate the status quo wherever I go. But I was really interested to hear Koreans (a super-patriotic nation if ever there were one) so openly bagging their own kind. Anyone else?

Most Koreans are totally aware of their own countries flaws, even though they won't admit it to complete strangers ( would you?) I'm surprised that you seem to think culture plays such a role in forming personality though. How exactly does someone "seem Chinese"?

your post reminded me of PLANET OF THE APES, the chimpanzies hated the gorillas, and vice versa.

Personally, I admit many problems with my country, but that's beside the point...

I have found that Koreans will generally agree with you on the first one or two complaints you bring up about Korea, after which they become defensive. In other words, they pretty much agree with everything you say, but once you bring up too many problems (which they also agree are problems) they use piss-poor logic to start defending their country. If you bring up one complaint per month, they'll probably agree with each and every one of them.

I regularly admit Australia's flaws to people I have just met. I am not so stupid as to go blindly waving the nationalist flag. However, I agree with you that the rest of this post is stupid. 'Seeming Chinese', sheesh!

yeah, i agree with this. so many people on this board have this arrogant attitude like foriegners are the only ones who see korean people's problems. but almost every korean i know has real mixed feelings about this country.

and i'm the same way about accepting complaints about america. i hear a few and i'm like "yeah, totally" but then you meet those douchebags who can't shut their cakehole about it and i just start being an asshole to them and saying really ridiculous shit like "black people enjoyed being slaves" just to piss them off. and it always works because they're so ready to hate americans that they easily think i really believe that stuff....oh, what was i saying? oh yeah, koreans, mixed feelings. right.

I met a couple guys like that while waiting in the immigration line in Thailand. They were both taller than me (6'2"), had really nice haircuts, wore business suits that were stylish and relaxed-looking while still fancy, spoke only in English to each other, no accent to their speech at all, and were laughing and having a good time in line instead of looking like they hated life because of having to wait. I started talking to them and asked where they live. "Seoul, of course! Haha!" I could not believe these guys were Korean, but they assured me they were.

Shocked

Get the *beep* outta here.

You mean not all Korean men wear plaid, spit and hork in public, beat their wives, hate the hell out of whitey, and can only manage the Konglish "Korea number one!"

Shut UP.

It's not true.

I'll never believe it!

Reductio ad Shintanjinum.

I was at a restaurant with the employees of my hagwon last night, and I went over to the bus driver ajosshi table. One of them pointed at himself and said, "Me... small *beep*!! Hahaha!"

Confused
