What does anyone here think about working in Hong Kong? Is 12,000 HK dollars per month the bottom of the barrel? I heard of a job there offering this amount, plus free accommodation. What's the going rate over there for teaching anyways? |

That's the basic "unqualified" rate. I have been offered 15,000 but I think that's only available in July-August as they are hiring for the beginning of the school year. I'm surprised you could get an offer at all, this time of year! HK is the greatest city in the world, but you'll have to economize a little on that salary. Have you ever been there? For some people, you just fall in love and you'll do anything to stay.
PS: free accomodation is a *major* benefit in Hong Kong, not like here, so that's one good thing |

$12,000 HK is very, very low. Most people I know SPEND that much in a month, just on rent, food, entertainment, etc. I try to live a fairly quiet life, yet I have a hard time keeping to a budget under 10K/month (excluding rent).
You say you'll get free accomodation, but what are the details? How big is it? Will you have a roomate? Location? Rental rates have shot up over the last year, how much is your prospective employer going to shell out for your flat?
As far as "HK is the greatest city in the world" - well.... that's another debate. Come and see for yourself. It's a great place to visit... |

Well, what's the going rate then, and how much do you spend per month on food, transportation, entertainment etc? Remember, I won't be paying rent. But I do have other bills to pay. I'm looking to save a little too, of course. What should a teacher there ask for in HK as for pay?
Yeah, I've been there too, but not to work. It has its magic to it. It introduced me to Asia, but I must say, that was over 15 years ago. I went there just last year and it's even more magnificent. |
