| I hate snakes. Perhaps it's because I'm from New Zealand where we don't have any but the scare the bejesus out of me. Yesterday I was walking along the hanriver with my friend and one was going across the path. I know that it's more scared of me and it was just looking for a place to sleep but they way they move and knowing how poisionous they are just freaks me out. |

Corporal has no phobias? She's either rare or in denial.
Most people experience above average levels of fear about something or another. A phobia is simply a fear deemed irrational because it's unusual or else more extreme than usual.

Most Koreans definitely have elurophobia.
Many ESL teachers develop nostophobia.
I know I'm getting lilapsophobic from being in Korea.
I've had melissophobia and aichmophobia since childhood experiences.
Three years in Korea and I'm becoming a bit anuptaphobic. |

Quite a list there. 
I'll stick with heights and flying. All balcony walls and window ledges in Korea seem to be lower than my center of gravity.
I won't go near 'em. And the construction workers on rail scaffolding with no platforms between! Can't watch that.
Odd thing is I was a paratrooper in the Army way back when, and enjoyed it much.
Maybe I just need to wear a parachute everywhere. |

*sigh* By definition a phobia is a fear that becomes irrational in its degree or kind.
So, your fear of marriage is a natural fear, just a fear, not a phobia, until, say, you meet a wonderful person and there's every indication that you and that person would be entirely happy getting married, the other person wants to but you don't because of your fear, and as a result of that fear you lose that person eventually. In that kind of case, where perhaps even you yourself admit it's in your best interests to get married, but have cold sweats and nightmares and a complete inability to do it, not just cold feet, but like runaway bride the movie, full flight from productive relationships just because they are leading to marriage (in the other's eyes at least) and you keep avoiding it.
We are not talking about when a person asserts a value and claims to be anti-marriage on principle, and is fully willing to live with the consequences of that principle on one's relationships.
We are talking about fears that one has to unusual extremes or of odd sorts, that are irrational.
I am scared when standing on a building near its ledge, but with that fear is a thrilling excited feeling that's kinda nice. I don't put myself in danger but I have no qualms leaning my elbows on the ledge of a tall building. Those with a phobia regarding height feel panicky and can't even bring themselves to go near a ledge, even when everyone else is watching something that's happening over that ledge. That fear is irrational (the ledge is high enough that even passing out one wouldn't fall over it, and it's strong, and one needn't lean over, just look over. That person is phobic about heights, though the dysfunction might only be minimal. Not being able to fly in airplanes when statistics show it's safer than driving to one's destination, and where one must fly because of some urgent need yet can't.
You get the point.
You might be scared at the prospects of mariage but you may not be phobic about it.

(Okay, please spare me the "fear vs phobia" lecture this time VI -- it's been a rough month.  )
Over the past few weeks, my entire office and two other companies have contracted full-blown ombrophobia, leading to acute costoverrunophobia and worrying signs of peniaphobia (which for some odd reason appears twice on Van Islander's list). Though only the latter would qualify as an irrational fear. Yet.

It was a joke. I'm well aware of what 'phobia' means and I have, on this very board, pointed out and argued against the term 'homophobic' as being inaccurate. |
