Every year my area puts on an english drama constest. The kids involved have to give most of the summer vacation as well as after school practices every day after school for 2 weeks.
To give the kids some motiviation I told them I'd treat them to Outback if they won. While a 2nd or 3rd place goes to Pizza Hutt. Usually my money is safe as Boys' schools never win. However this year my kids won. So good to my word I took them to Outback. The outing wasn't cheap with seven kids but I took advantage of the lunch special.
While there one of my students mentioned that the K teachers had told them I was making more money than them. While I realise this was a big treat, the kids did such a great job and I don't really spoil my kids as I've got so many of them. It really put a damper on the whole day. |

Congratulations on your and your punks' victory!
Just tell the kids that you aren't aware of how much the K-teachers make and that your income should be none of their(the K-teacher's) business. Tell them that you would've done it even if you were late on rent because you are proud of 'em.
The cheap K-teachers may not have done anything for them...expecting them to win first-place as the students' duty. It's also probably beneath them to say "Good work!"
Just forget about it. |

one thing i have noticed that sometimes happens, is that if a student does well in a contest then the parents will treat the teacher to a nice lunch or buy a gift. This Doesn't happen all the time but I have heard of it. IF the parents are generous then you might be getting a gift clg. Especially if you took their kids out to lunch at outbacks. Although I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for anything. |

Usually though the K-teachers take all the credit and get all the gifts.
I coached this middle school girl to first place in an Incheon speech contest and her parents were so excited they gave the Korean teacher at the hackwon (who had exactly nothing to do with her winning) a digital camera. Me, I got squat from the parents.
Though the girl wrote me a sweet note thanking me for my teaching. |

I feel your frustration.
When my former Chilean high school contacted me in the States, asking me to take a job in 2003, I said that I simply could not afford to work in Chile on a teacher's salary. They responded by offering me starting pay equivalent to someone who'd been teaching for 20 years, and what is called "an indefinite contract" there, something less than five or ten percent of the workforce enjoys. I accepted.
When I arrived, on my first day, I met with the dean, the head priest, and the business manager. They promised that my salary would be a secret, and no one's business but mine.
But this was Chile.
The teachers, non-teaching staff, and students were all related or interrelated.
Within a week of my arrival, the clerical staff who typed the contracts and printed the checks had mentioned my contract and salary to someone at home, and it spread from there, geometrically. The Foreign Languages staff had to go through several weeks of group therapy in the dean's office, with the priest presiding. And still some of the teachers kept badmouthing me to the students.
It's not always clear how it's worth it to put up with such nonsense. |

I feel for you. We who live overseas have to deal with the fact that the most innocuos parts of our lives are spent under the microscope. Spent most of my life knowing this, Korea is good compared to some places.
Congrats, you are still the talk of the town in Chili |

Yes, try to live your life abroad low-profile, and they won't let you. Frustrating. |

Well, at least you aren't the two lesbians I heard of working for the UN, who were the first lesbians in a country anyone had ever heard of. They were watched through the window and ten years later, their lives are still being discussed.
With comments like "I didn't know women did that".
No, its not me. |

But, but, but you earn less! Well at public school you do... I've been having the same woes though - didn't you know, all native teachers earn about 8mill a month?? But i talked to a teacher about that and they were actually quite shocked at how less we earn then them and less than what they thought! Since the 'truth came out' (told 1 teacher and by lunchtime the word had spread) i've been treated a bit different and my coffee has stopped being nicked! |

I buy my fellow k-teachers a nice cake on their birthday and if I cook on Sunday night try to make enough for them to bring in on Monday. Christmas I always lay out a nice little spread for them. They may be jealous over the pay/time but they can't say that I don't try to do something nice for them with that extra scratch. |

At least at my school I can honestly say no K teacher will ever gossip about how much money I make in comparison to them unless they are talking about how little I make. They make significantly more than I do but I don't begrudge them. They have a lot more responsibilities than I do. |

I thought I earned less than the public school teachers. Especially when chuseok bonuses, gifts etc. are factored in.
Every time I go to Costco I usually bring back a box of cookies for the K teachers, and last year I bought the Korean english teachers some imported chocolate, plus minder got a decent bottle of wine.
The fact that they were gossiping (incorrectly) to my students about my salary really ticked me off. |

Tell one of the other teachers how angry you are about it. The one thing, that i've learned about Koreans is that they can't handle direct confrontation. However, putting the word out there about your feelings generally solves the problems. At least in my case. |

Did it occur to you that maybe they mentionned the outing to their Korean teachers, trying to manipulate/shame them into getting them to match or top your reward? I'm sure the Korean teachers would have said that they didn't have any money for that. If that was the case, would it be possible that the kids are trying to get revenge by creating some friction between you and the other teachers? Kids aren't dumb, you know. |
