I want a pet really badly.
I had a cat but the hair = allergy problems so now I'm thinking of getting a hamster. How much do they smell? Reckon I can pass him on after my 7months are up? (they stay mega cute their whole lives). |

I had a hamster when I first got here, before dumping it off on a student.
The smell isn't bad, but they are nocturnal, so when you're trying to sleep, they'll be running their wheel, and when you want to play with them, they'll be sleeping. Plus, they're not too affectionate. They just want to escape. |

captain kirk from here at Dave's (the guy who makes great authentic boomerangs as a hobby) had no problem getting someone to take his hamster when he left the country for a couple of months - I adopted the little guy and gave him a pretty good home for over six months before "Hammy" - a party animal who loved to go a few rounds on the wheel at sundown - died one stormy night... I think he was scared to death by the weather - but it may have just been the failing heart of an old hamster. I didn't have an autopsy done, so I dunno for sure. He's buried next to a hot pepper garden now. I miss the buddy. If I should be insane enough to sign on for a fourth yearly contract here next summer, then I might be willing to caretake another hamster. They are fun! and definitely have personalities. |

Aw, I'd love a hamster too, but wouldn't get one because I am only here for a year and I don't think I would be able to take it back to the UK. When I was a wee girl I had a lovely Golden hamster called Charlie. He was huge and used to try to eat his way out of his cage and go round and round and round in his little red wheel all night. |

I don't think you should get an animal unless you plan on keeping him or her for life, and I don't think anyone anywhere should ever patronize animal breeders of any kind. (And I totally agree about the need to prevent people from coming here only to stir up hate. What an idiot.) |

Well, maybe you could cat-sit for people who are going away? Sometimes people post ads for that kind of thing. If you can commit to take care of a homeless animal until he or she gets adopted, that would be a wonderful thing, of course, but you have to be careful -- sometimes it's hard to find homes for them and they get very attached to their foster parents. |

Nah turns out I have a bit of a mega allergy to cat hair.
Its fine when I have a cat in a big house with a garden but in a single apartment its too much. |

Yes, I can understand how you feel. I really wish I could adopt an animal too but I don't think it would be a good idea right now because of my nomadic life. But maybe you could adopt a hamster who needs a home, then take him or her back to your country with you? I don't know what the rules are where you're from, and you'd have to do a lot of checking, but I imagine it wouldn't be impossible? I think it's only a good idea if you're really 100 percent committed to keeping the animal. |

Just do not, for the love of everything, believe the nice little Ajumma who tries to sell you the cute little "dwarf" rabbits that don't grow much bigger than they are as babies...... it's crap, they are full sized rabbits, that get as big as dogs...... |

A roommate of mine had one of those, but he died after only a week. So the poor bunny never got old enough to grow to his full size. |

If you wait longer than 2 weeks without cleaning them, they smell. Otherwise, it's okay.
If you are a super light sleeper (like me), you won't be able to sleep while he's running on the wheel and biting on the bars.
I love hamsters too. I want one, but my girlfriend hates them too much. Always '' |

We don't really know why the bunny died, but he came down with diarrhea very suddenly and we didn't realize how serious his condition was until it was too late. He may have been taken away from his mother too soon, and/or his diet may not have been appropriate. The point is, buying an animal from a street vendor is not the way to go.
